Why no ESPN outlet in Detroit ?

Post by handsomebradybreaker » Fri May 25, 2018 12:42 pm

Why is Detroit lacking an ESPN station ? (I mean,Cincinnati has one at 1530 AM.) WDFN briefly carried "The World Wide Leader In Sports" before reverting to Fox Sports Radio in 2010 or thereabouts. We in the Detroit/Windsor area should be able to get ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball and Sunday and Monday Night Football, and the NBA rather than the mediocrity we're served at 1130 AM.

105.1 was ESPN for a few years, and it bombed.

For the game broadcasts it would be nice to have but not all the national talk shows. Last night while driving I was trying find the Warriors/Rockets game and 1000 AM from Chicago had better reception than 1530.

Detroit has ESPN and ESPN2 on cable, and both Detroit and Windsor have ESPN Classic on the expanded digital tier of cable providers...

This market would really do well with hearing the Dan Le Batard Show. It NEEDS it.

The godforsaken 1090 AM WCAR carried ESPN Radio from Feb. 2012 into July of 2013.
Nobody noticed.

Coachman left ESPN and signed with WWE. He is one of the commentators on RAW.

Several posters on this thread do not seem to know the difference between TV and radio.

Honestly, no one noticed when it was on. If one wants ESPN radio, download the AP or listen online. I imagine you can find it on another AM station if you looked hard enough.

I-Heart Media, I ask you to please bring back 106.7 The D, but without Journey,Eddie money, or Styx. ALT 106.7 sucks ass!

ESPN's broadcast rights $$$ are pretty spendy…..they require that you carry a lot of their programming that may pre empt morning or afternoon drive local shows....Even in Saginaw market, its based out of Midland on a not so strong FM station.....I kind of prefer FOX sports.....

Because we are extremely provincial here in Detroit. We don't do national very well. Ask Howard Stern about it some time.

Of course! Number one in every market he was in except Detroit. Got blown out here twice!

Actually, when you look at new affiliate adds that occurred from the late 90's onward, there were a number of large markets where Stern failed to ever reach the upper echelon in the ratings. Risque content on TV & radio was fairly easy to find by that point.

Examples off the top of my head:
Denver
Cincinnati
Charlotte
Indianapolis
Detroit
Minneapolis

It would've been interesting to see how Stern's ratings would've played out here in Detroit had his shown been added in, say, 1994.

Radio's downfall has been under-investing in its core competency and becoming distracted by delusions of grandeur by thinking development of a half-assed national digital strategy will somehow put it on par with the Facebooks and Googles of the world.

Stern struggled to find a foothold in Chicago, too, though that was earlier in the 90's. Mancow successfully played the Chicago vs. NY angle against him for a long time.

Stern was only on 97.1, so it's not like the show was pulled and he came back. He was on Detroit radio for 9 years, however for some reason he never gelled overall. Drew and Mike playing a big factor. He was on fire in Cleveland.

If an ESPN outlet comes to Detroit,I wonder if Golic and Greenberg, best buds who fell out last year after 18 years on the World Wide Leader Of Sports, would re-unite ?
