the end has come to WCHB AM1200

Post by Steve79 » Thu Jun 22, 2017 7:22 pm

looks like Mildred Gaddis moves to Praise 102.7 WDZR..... I mean WPZR :razz next Monday.
I hope Crawford doesn't make this a religious formatted station.... I'd personally would LOVE to keep the smooth jazz 24/7, but thats highly unlikely.... But I'd love soft AC of oldies, or a "memories" style format....

I cannot pick up W260CB 99.9FM whatsoever in my location, so thats out of the question.

We'll have to wait and see....

If Radio One never bothered to monetize Smooth Jazz, it's a sure thing Crawford won't. They are both lousy operators. As for W260CB, I would imagine there will still be plenty of dead air, that will stretch across entire weekends, and beyond, no matter what the format may be.

Steve, that would be nice wishful thinking on our end that Crawford actually uses 1200 for soft AC/classic gold/memories music format. Does this station still have an IBOC exciter/transmitter? I would be scared that Crawford would fire that up- if they had a music format, I wouldn't mind it so much, but if it's going to be the same crud as 560 Monroe, it's a waste. Be nice if Cris Alexander came here an personally made the station sound decent. and de-commission 560.

My guess is 102.7 gets a new format with it's new transmitter site and WEXL is moved to 1200.

Somehow, I can't envision Cris visiting a single transmitter site. He could get dirt, dust, or mouse doo-doo on his $1000 suit.

Audiophile you may be correct.... I've been listening to WCHB and they are airing promos for Mildred's show saying " listen to Mildred at her new home on 102.7 WPZR" And the show right now they too are calling praise 102.7 "102-7 WPZR" no mention of the word "praise"

I suspect the new WPZR will be a mix of Urban talk, gospel music and brokered programming - just like WCHB used to be until a few years ago.

I could also see the gospel music being tossed in favor of old school/classic soul.

Doesn't really make sense to call the station "Praise 102.7" anymore given the fact it will be featuring a secular morning show.

MW, you may be on to something with your Classic Soul theory. To be fair, Radio One has a fantastic Old School-Classic Soul station in Cincinnati (AM 1230/FM 101.5) but it has something the Detroit cluster is lacking. And that's TALENT. I'll believe it when I hear it.

Soul 101.5 in Cincinnati is only a 99 watt translator paired with a puny AM station. The classic soul music they play appeals to listeners too old for advertising agencies to care about, so the format is unlikely to end up on full power 102.7 WPZR. The “Praise” gospel music format is likely to stay. Radio One runs such a format in many big cities where they have three full power FMs.

I am hoping that a classic soul format ends up on the 99.9 FM translator (and 105.9 HD2) that will no longer have WCHB AM to translate. They have already announced that the translator will continue to run the Tom Joyner Morning Show. So does Soul 101.5 Cincinnati, so there is a possibility of the same format on the translator in Detroit.

And 1340 becomes a simulcast of 560

Brokered Christian/Talk is Crawford’s big money making format in their various markets around the country. It will go on the best signal. WRDT 560 will move to 1200.

Hmmm? I agree 560 and 1340 will likely be paired together. Format from 560 goes to 1200. 102.7 takes on the WCHB calls, "102.7 WCHB" . 1200 gets a new set of call letters. just my guess. When does the sale close?

As of 8:00PM, both AM 1200 and 99.9 FM have flipped to Classic Soul, complete with a new liner/ID package. 102.7 is still Gospel.

The ID's all say "AM1200 WCHB" and soul 99.9 Detroit's home for Motown and classic soul.

They must be holding on to 1200 for a bit longer.

I must say I'm very impressed!!! I love the music!

I think this will probably move to 102.7, they are just getting the format and things ready for the move before they hand Crawford the keys.

You can also hear the “Soul 99.9” format on 105.9 WDMK HD2. It is the originating station that 99.9 FM W260CB is licensed to translate.

You can now hear oldies on 94.7 HD2, 104.3 HD2, and 105.9 HD2.

99.9 minus 1200 will be useless as an Urban station. It delivers a reliable signal to almost none of Wayne County.

Radio One should just sell 99.9. Good luck finding an audience when 80 percent of your intended audience cannot pick up the analog FM clearly.

HD side channels have low reach and cannot be relied upon to drive cume. 60 percent or more of radio listening occurs indoors. Very few folks have HD Radio receivers at home or at the workplace.

Their Detroit cluster is such a shit show outside of 105.9.

I agree 100 percent that 99.9 FM is a horrible signal to reach the city of Detroit. Maybe they could trade for one of the K-Love translators.

W260CB is licensed to Hamtramck. Therefore, one would think it would cover Detroit, and the inner-ring suburbs just fine. Which one of the Oak Park towers is it on? It's unlistenable atop the I-75 Rouge River Bridge, but that's obviously due to Toledo.

I suspect the placement of the antenna in Oak Park had to do with height, and suburban migration of the anticipated audience. Not all of WCHB's audience are in Wayne County anymore.
