Rod Allen on 7/5/17 Tigers pregame show

Post by DAC » Wed Jul 05, 2017 10:14 pm

Did anyone catch the "Tigers Live" pregame show before tonight's game? Just prior to doing the "pick the stick" shtick, Rod said to Craig Monroe: "Hey C-MO. This past weekend was negro league weekend. How'd a brother like you get the weekend off?"

This was followed by some awkward laughter by the other members of the broadcast team. I'm not sure if it's a big deal or not. What do you all think?

Can't stand Rod and Mario. If I had a choice I'd watch the "away" coverage instead of the "home" coverage just to avoid them.

Understood. But what do you think about this particular instance?

In the postgame report someone mentioned a "Bugs Bunny Pitch", (which I've believe is a very slow change up.) While I got the reference, (because I watched a lot of cartoons growing up) and I thought it was kind of clever, I also kind of thought the announcer left a lot of the viewers scratching their heads, (or heading to google.)

Heard it - didn't think it was a big deal...

I like Mario with Kirk Gibson. Gibby has been giving Mario the business more and more - and isn't afraid of being critical of the team when needed so...

Sounds like harmless banter.

Despite the rumors started on this board, I enjoy Rod & Mario, and they seem to enjoy each other. Rod Allen seems to know how to keep things loose, even when Mr. Straight-Laced Matt Sheperd is around.

Even with his illness Gibson is a really good listen now, much more so than when he and Josh Lewin did the games back in the late 90s and early 2000s. I feel like I get real insight with him. I don't enjoy the Mario-Rod pairing nearly as much.

How would it have sounded if Mario Impemba or Kirk Gibson had made the same remark?

Yeah, well if anyone's read Detroit Tigers history, they'd know the Bengals were the second-last club to integrate-Ozzie Virgil,Sr.,June 6,1958,and long had just three or four men of colour-including Hispanics-until the 90's.
As for Allen, his pronunciation of "Second Deck" is a Valenti show drop.(Why is Rod allowed to talk about his 1984 Tigers presence, which was fewer then 10 games,I believe?Lenny Green,83,a Detroit native, played three games for the '68 Tigers.I never hear him-or anyone else-mention this cameo with the beloved Boys From Syracuse, then the Bengals' Triple-A affiliate.)

Are you just upset that you couldn't say it?

I'm not upset. Just wondering how the general population think it would have sounded. But since you brought it up, are you saying that Rod could say it with no problem, and Mario could not?

For the record, I think it sounded bad from Rod, and would have sounded bad had it come from anyone. It showed a lack of professionalism on the air.
