WFDF, WJR Reach 95th Birthday

Post by Fingerboard Corners » Tue May 23, 2017 7:48 am

No one seems to talk about radio station History anymore, but WFDF and WJR are reaching their 95th Birthday. WJR's History traces back to Pontiac and Sylvan Lake, and WFDF began in Flint, and both were first licensed as commercial radio stations in May, 1922. WFDF's History as an experimental station traces back before their commercial station license, like WWJ's, and many others whose History is now reflected in Wikipedia articles.

Has anyone heard any mention of this on the air? WJR was first licensed commercially on May 4, 1922, and WFDF was first licensed commercially on May 25, 1922. Both are among the 100 oldest stations operating in the United States.

Young people today seem to have no sense of History, and jokes about this being the average age of their listeners will soon appear. But aging will catch up to these young people sooner than they think.

that's an amazing milestone! i wonder if there are any stations out there that have already passed an official 100 years of service (not counting experimental stations)...

KDKA is approaching 97. WWJ is approaching 96 as a commercial license.

JP did a great Focus interview of Bud Guest and Charlie Park, Sr. in 1982 for their 60th, and it was repeated in 1992 on their 70th. I don't recall much mention after that year. You are correct, much of the respect for the History of WJR left us when JP passed away. They still have the St. Patrick's Day celebration, but that's one of the few remnants of the past.

Former WFDF News Director Les Root did an 80th Anniversary retrospective of WFDF in 2002, right before Disney took over. Les Root has also passed away. Before he passed away, I emailed and asked Les Root if he had tapes of these, but he said they got lost in a studio move. I also asked Art Vuolo if he had tapes of the WJR 60th and 70th retrospective, but he didn't have those also.

Mike Whorf, if he's still active, might have those. He was involved in some of the WJR history. The late Mike Deja would've been great for that as he knew where lots of things were, even after they moved to different floors in the late 80s and boxed up most of the old stuff. Some may still be in storage, but I kinda doubt it.

Mike Whorf would be good for a historical show. CFCO did brag about their 80th, IIRC, and WSM did celebrate their anniversary with a picnic at the transmitter site. These legendary legacy stations should make a big deal about it- not many companies last that long.

WDIV's 70th anniversary was March 4, did they mention it at all? WJBK and WXYZ are 70 next year, and WMYD will be 50.
