Cartridge for SL1200

Post by TC Talks » Tue Dec 04, 2018 8:42 pm

I'm exploring cartridges for my SL1200. I currently have a Stanton 500, I can't figure out what would be a nice upgrade. I'm not DJing I am just listening to my vinyl. Any thoughts?

I’m kind of in the same boat with my 1200. I have a Shure SC39ED cartridge. Shure stopped making the replacement stylus. I have an EJ replacement stylus in there now.
Thinking about going back to the Stanton 500.

Also, Shure ceased production and styli for the M78.

Are Audio Technica cartridges solid?

Ex-stereo salesman here. (Anybody remember the Stereoland chain?)

Without hearing how the cartridge and the speakers sound together, it's tough to make a suggestion. A "bright" cartridge teamed with a neutral-sounding speaker might sound fine, but the same cartridge teamed with a "bright" speaker would be awful. Try to audition the speakers and cartridge together.

How do I do that? No one sells them here

In that case, cross your fingers and hope for good luck.

Where do they sell cartridges in Detroit where you can test them?

I would start with Audio Dimensions in Royal Oak. Alma's, also in Royal Oak, would be my second choice. Those are the most likely candidates. Maybe Pecar Electronics in Troy. Maybe Paulson's in Farmington Hills.

I ended up with a Grado Prestidge series stylus. Now I think I need to upgrade the speakers.

Mom and Dad, encourage your children to become audiophiles. That will make sure that they never have money for drugs. What's wrong with the speakers all of a sudden?

A phono cartridge has at least one transformer between it and the circuit, so a speaker really cannot interact with it.

Speakers have different tonal qualities.

Cartridges have different tonal qualities.

I was looking to replace my entire audio system. I settled on all the other components before selecting the cartridge.

The first one I auditioned was so bright sounding that it created a harsh sillibance that was unlistenable to both the salesman and me.

The second cartridge had a much smoother sound in this configuration. That's the one I chose.

Where did you get the cartridge, TC?

Amazon after reading reviews from 5 or 6 sources.

Grado is Brooklyn based and seems to be furthering the sound quality race.

Grado is a good choice. They've been doing quality pro phono cartridges for decades.
Choice of cartridge and stylus also depends on end user needs. A delicate, strictly audiophile unit wouldn't be up to the workout that a club DJ on those "wheels of steel" SL1200s (slip cuing, scratch, etc.) would subject it to, so there are different product lines for that user segment. A DJ can now pretty much exactly duplicate those effects on newer CD turntables, so probably not as many stylii needing frequent replacement. An "all vinyl" set is becoming a special promotional occasion, even among "old school" Techno and House DJs.

My requirements are sitting in my library listening to my records. I concluded since most of these I only listened to while at a radio station, I want my turntable to sound like a radio station turntable. So far so good.
