WOMC - rip?

Post by stopnswop2 » Sat May 20, 2017 3:01 am

With the playlist changes (removing all 60's and most of the 70's) and now the AWFUL new jingles, I think WOMC is going to go crashing down in the ratings. I've stuck with them for years but I can't do it anymore. It went from me not able to turn them off, to the point where listening is actually annoying.

any opinions of the new jingles and and playlist changes?

I do miss more 70s music. They did play a lot of burned-out songs from that decade like CSX does, but they did play some good, lesser-known titles (especially during JJs request show).

The song repetition has gotten really bad, IMO. How many times do we have to hear "Walking In Memphis", anyway?

The first month they didn't move in the ratings...

I absolutely LOVE the current sound of WOMC! I'm 37 and this is what I grew up listening to. I can't turn the station off! I hope they keep it up!

And thus the reason it works... I'm 27 and it sounds fine to me too...

I heard Londonbeat's I've Been Thinking About You (from 1991) on WOMC today. That song is 26 years old! That would be like hearing a late 70s song on oldies station in 2005 or so.

While that would be a little odd it wouldn't be too far off what happened...

I wish I was 27 again, lol, but I agree, 'OMC does sound good musically. I'm a fan of jingles and would love to hear them again, but the music is great.

This is not an oldies station. Hasn't been for a while. It's CLASSIC HITS. The format adjusts every year. It's absolutely hitting the 25-54 demo, as some of you here attested to by revealing your age (and that you like the station sound). The 70's for the most part have been moved to the 55+ (oldies). Got news for ya... 2K is not far away on any classic (greatest) format.

And in some markets, 2K is already in. KRTH in LA is playing No Doubt's "It's My Life" and WCBS has played "All Summer Long", just for two examples.

IMHO, Oldies vs. Classic Hits should be roughly based on years from present.

Classic Hits: 25+ YFP (80s based currently)
Oldies: 35+ YFP (more 60s/70s based currently)

Stations across the country are within top 3 and many #1. For the 70’s music that is 47 years ago and for the 60’s I’s 57 years ago generally people that like 70’s and 60’s is quite mature.
In NY WCBS-FM is constantly #1.
CBS is updating all of the Classic Hit stations. K-Earth in LA is an example. All the 60’s top 40 jocks have left. Two who were let go last year is Charlie VanDyke and Shotgun Tom Kelly.
Like consumer products you need to update. WOMC sub HD channel starts at about 1955 and up.

The same griping went on when OMC dumped 50's and most of the 60's music. Honestly they were sounding stale and too much like CSX. They're going to peel off the older demos which is what needs to happen for them to survive. You can talk all day long about how the older demos have more disposable income, but for most ad buys, the buyers are looking for 25-54.

Charlie Tuna was let go, and died shortly after while starting up a syndication service. Shotgun was let go after. Charlie Van Dyke has been doing a successful promo/imaging/liner VO biz for radio and tv stations from Phoenix for many years, and a few years ago he moved it into his home. He hasn't jocked in LA in ages.

Time will tell for this legacy station. I'm not ready to have a funeral for the station at this point. I think they're evolving with the times..... and if the song playing is one I want to hear, then I'll keep the station on. Otherwise..... my ADD kicks in and I flip the dial......

Otherwise I've been listening online to WCBS101 in NYC which has some of the similar programming.

Give it time.... it will be a bumpy ride ;-) as always

The '80s are my favorite decade of music so no complaint from me. It's the music I grew up hearing on Z95.5/Q95 and (to an extent) Power 96 (I'm also 37). I like traditional oldies too (I also listen to CKWW, WCXI and CFZM) but I accept I'm not going to get them from WOMC anymore.

Yeah, I mentioned the new awful jingles in the first post in this thread.
I want the old JAM Jingles. They were catchy and i loved to sing along to them.

The new ones make the station sound like some Hot AC station.

Also wanted to add another subject.
People in their early 50s and anyone in their 40s would have grown up with the late 60s music and the entire 70's decade,
So I don't quite understand the logic here. I'm sure they also grew up with even older music like I did.
i am 26 and I grew up listening to the 60's-90's

Well, I think we would all agree that WOMC is better than WHNN..,I heard the Commodores and Lady Gaga on there...
Ask not what your country can do FOR you; ask what they are about to do TO YOU!!
