CBEF 540

Post by Deleted User 14803 » Sun Nov 04, 2018 7:18 pm

Any idea as to what happened to the land where CBEF tower array was located?

Well, the very rusty and aged towers were demolished, as was the transmitter building, and the ground seems to be just fallow, as seen in this Google Maps Satellite View (look at the northern side of Middle Side Road/County Road 10 where Clubview Drive meets it)... I'm sure eventually it will either revert to farm land, or the CBC will just hold on to it in case they ever need land to build another AM or FM or TV array...

Edit: Whoops! forgot to include the google maps link! here it is:

I remember when I lived in Riverview you could see the 4 towers from the Detroit River at night.

It’s to bad no one could have put another station on 540 such a great signal and dial location.

I thought it (and CKWW 580) suffered from adjacent channel interference from WRDT 560's IBOC digital sidebands... besides, CBEF got the best deal possible: upgraded to a 50 kW clear-channel frequency :D

Any reason CKWW couldn't move to 540 with a monstrous 50KW signal, just like the ole BIG 8 ??

Neither 540 nor 1550 could be easily upgraded to 50 kW. CBEF 1550 is just 10 kW. Either one would have to have more towers and a narrow beamwidth to have significantly more power.

I've always wondered why CBEF's towers were of different heights (the south and west towers were taller than the north and east).

It seems sadder that the 540 frequency is idle, as opposed to the array.

One wonders if 540 could be diplexed by CKWW on the CKLW array, or, better yet, diplex CKWW on 630 (escaping IBOC hash from WRDT), And put CFCO on 540 as "Ontario's Country Station"

It has become more difficult to broadcast from 540 kHz in Windsor because 530 CIAO Brampton-Toronto went non-directional days after CBEF moved up to 1550. I will be surprised if 540 AM is ever used in the Province of Ontario again.

630 could still have a better signal to the west where they are now.
