Could AM800 simulcast on 88.7???
Could AM800 simulcast on 88.7???
As newstalk CHQR 770 is now simulcasting on 107FM in Calgary Alberta after flipping its classic rock Q107.....
Could Bell Media do the same to AM800 on its 100,000 watt 88.7??? As AM radio is fading to black with younger demographics and automakers.
The CRTC is now looking at CHQR s application to see if its viable under their regulations.

Re: Could AM800 simulcast on 88.7???
A few years ago CKLW-AM's signal was broadcast on CKWW-AM's signal with no prior announcement as CKLW-AM's transmitter wasn't working and management decided to keep the signal alive by using the 580 frequency. Hours later CKLW-AM's transmitter was fixed and normal broadcasting resumed.

Never mind. I had that station mixed up with Toronto's station. Carry on.

Re: Could AM800 simulcast on 88.7???
CKWW is actually on 580.
While CKLW soon returned to the air, as I recall, it operated with a 10000 watt backup transmitter for at least several weeks on 800. Since CKLW now focuses on just Windsor, rather than the large areas near Detroit and in Michigan and other nearby states like in The Big 8 era, listeners probably didn't notice much reduction where they listened.
Proposed new rules would allow three full power FM stations in a market in some cases. But unless they acquire other full power FMs in the market, it will be difficult to upgrade translators to full power FMs with much higher ERP. Many of the Windsor Essex FMs are owned by Canada, and others have niche formats, and French language formats, which they are required to maintain.

The CRTC would allow Bell Media to simulcast at least one of their Windsor AM stations on FM if that's what they want to do. If Pure Country 89 comes to an end, I'd expect Bell to change it to Move 88.7 with A.C. before anything else.

I actually listen to a couple of their shows every day. The morning show can be hilarious.

Corus is doing just that in Calgary, with CHQR AM 770 now rebroadcasted on CFGQ-FM 107.3, with its news-talk format. Introduced in January without CRTC approval, Corus made the formal application to them this week, though now making CHQR a rebroadcaster of CFGQ.

Re: Could AM800 simulcast on 88.7???
I'll admit I approach the subject of CKWW (AM 580, frequency duly noted) being simulcasted/transferred to 88.7 FM with mixed emotions. While CKWW is one of my favorite stations, I have stated in the past that part of the station's charm is being broadcast on the AM band in that many if not most of the recordings were meant to played on AM radio. Conversely I would rather listen to CKWW's oldies format on FM rather than have no CKWW at all. (I hope reports of AM's impending death are exaggerated.)

Would love it if they did the simalcast on one of their FM signals, and moved the news format to 580, then moved the 580 format to AM800, where it really belongs.

Rogers does this in Ottawa with 1310 CIWW and 101.1 FM (CJET). They killed off a long-running Country format (although it started on a different frequency) to bring the CityNews brand to FM.
