A FLAT EARTH group has paid WBCQ's owner to upgrade the 9330kHz transmitter with new 500kW Continental transmitter and Ampegon rotatable array antenna system. Test recently have put a +20 over 9 (or stronger!) signal across it's main lobe. When aimed over Michigan, I could get a +25 over 9 signal on my Grundig Sat 800ME with the whip pushed into the body! I can get them on my console via a long mic cable when no mic is attached! And their modulation is LOUD!
Soon, it will stop testing and we'll unfortunately get 500kW of unprecedented "flat earth" ignorance 24/7.

WBCQ,9330 is now S9+25 dB in Commerce, using a double zepp antenna for the 30 M band, up 35 ft in trees.
Receiving off the side of tha antenna, that is aimed for Europe and Australia

Originally was in the CW mode with a narrow filter but with the AM mode and a 12 kHz filter they ar e S9 +40 dB !!
The modulation kicks the meter up a few more dB .

I'm disappointed in their lack of imagination, building an HF system with double sidebands and only horizontal polarization.
Radio Netherlands used single sideband full carrier in the early nineties. Their audio was very clear, without the sweeping cancellation effects that occurred with plain AM. If you heard dynamic non-linearity in shortwave audio response (especially notable when there was music or applause), SSFC greatly reduced that.
Circular polarization on HF is relatively simple using a directional helical radiator/rear reflector antenna
(almost parallel to the ground - tilted for best propagation angle on skywave). Yes, the helical beam has a different characteristic impedance, but the difference can be tuned out. With circular polarization, the chance that the vertical and horizontal components fail simultaneously is greatly reduced. One may note that circular polarization results in half of the signal strength being lost at the receiver, but when the signal is intended for broadcasting, it's not the power at the peaks that matters, it's the strength in the fades.
This was obviously when some VHF-lowband TV stations started using CP in the early 1980s. During sporadic-E openings, the TV stations with CP came in strong and steady.

FWIW... WBCQ blew the system up in under a week! 9330 kHz has been quiet ever since.
As for SSB, the majority of pirates use SSB mode and it is a far cry better than AM IMO.
