Funny how these problems seem to have all come about since AT&T's acquisition of DirecTV. I know people who really liked U-verse before the merger, and Consumer Reports gave AT&T decent ratings for customer service just a few years back. Now U-verse is being phased out and AT&T is pushing DirecTV in their bundles. Aside from the fact that many U-verse subs aren't logistically able to position a dish, it appears that these new bundles aren't being billed as advertised, and customers are being treated like this is all their fault. 4,000 billing complaints in two years is a problem.

Me thinks this wasn't thought out very well.

The extra rub is the customer can't just cancel and walk away without being slapped with the early termination fee. AT&T is holding the sub to his/her end of the contract while disregarding their obligation to same. In addition, the customer agrees to binding arbitration through (of course) the company's hand-picked arbitrator, thus surrendering any right to take the company to small claims for the charges.

And it's not just AT&T/DirecTV. Just for grins (and out of pure boredom), I got out my magnifying glass and read the fine print on a Dish Network circular in our Sunday paper. I was astonished to see that the "guaranteed rate" they offer in the big print nearly triples over two years. Of course, they're hoping that the customer will be hooked by then and just pay it. Then there are all the little "extra charges" (DVR fees, second receivers, etc) that aren't included in the introductory rate, but can add up in a hurry. They count on the fact that most people don't fully read these contracts before signing them, but once you sign, they've pretty much got you.

Thought for the day....if it sounds like an awesome deal, look for the hook!

I haven't found any hooks in the outdoor antenna...

I'm under contract with DirecTV for another 7 months. I believe my termination fee is something like $20/month, which honestly is not a cost prohibitive amount. Switching to either DirecTV Now or Youtube TV would more than pay for that difference. The thing that is annoying me is that it appears that DirecTV will not waive a contract termination if you flip to DirecTV Now. I understand why they won't want to leave money on the table, but I'm thinking in the next month or so I may call and say I want to switch and see if they'll work with me and perhaps allow a portion of the cancellation go to a multi-month commitment to DirecTV Now. The biggest thing stopping me is that the two options that I've identified both have issues that they are working on resolving: 1) DirecTV Now is working on a cloud DVR and has beta users currently with an expectation of full deployment in 2018 2) Youtube TV has an app for 2016/17 Samsung smart TVs and is working on 2014/15 as we speak.

At this point, all I can say for certain is I'm not going to be continuing with the current setup after the contract ends. Hopefully the changes can be made even sooner than that.

Tell them you're considering non-Direct options when you call. Toss around a few words like Dish and Comcast. Tell them you'd like to like to switch to DirectTV Now if you could get a good deal. Chances are they'll work something out to keep you from going elsewhere. There's no incentive to waive the termination fee as long as they think they're the only game on the table. Sure, they can slap you with it if you leave, they'll lose your future business in the process. Give them a reason to keep you as a customer.

I was looking in U-verse but I am now reconsidering, way too much mumbo jumbo to read through and confusing.
