NewsOn

Post by mtburb » Mon Dec 18, 2017 7:41 pm

Figured this forum would be appropriate to run this topic...

I discovered this wonderful website which also has it's own apps. Basically it allows you to simultaneously watch various newscasts from across the nation, but the intriguing part is the commercial breaks.

I've seen WDIV just air random promos with a random commercial thrown in; WHIO air all of their regular commercials and promos intact; most other stations just cut to a "we'll be back" graphic during when ads normally air on their television broadcasts-the fun part of that being WWMT and WSYX running the exact same graphic when they go to when they air commercials on their TV broadcasts due to their co-ownership.

In addition to that, I've noticed WOOD's stream randomly freezing every few minutes and even saw WOIO's stream randomly go offline for a couple minutes in the middle of their 6 PM newscast.

So I'm wondering how is NewsOn profiting from all of this?

For three days in January 2017 (15th, 16th, 19th) and one night in September 2017 (22nd), I managed to receive KDKA Pittsburgh from 202 miles away indoors!

NewsOn makes money from their own embedded ads.

I have a slow connection, and on Roku, I often see ad breaks of four or five commercials each. Each ad takes a while to load.

At least on (for example) the FoxNow and CBS All Access apps, the four spots run smoothly within the stream.

Just browsing their website and noticed that they have added WPBN since last time I was on there (at the time they only had WWTV for Traverse City).

11:26 PM: Watching WLS news and they too have their own graphic placed over commercial breaks, but just now I noticed that they ran Xfinity and the beginning of an America's Best commercial before someone noticed and flipped the graphic on.

An overdue March update....

First, Nexstar has pulled all of their stations (including WOOD and WCMH, both of which used to appear on the homepage on my end) from NewsOn.

Additionally, WNEM has been added to NewsOn, though for some reason they don't stream their 9 AM newscast.

Sucks to lose WOOD-TV.

WCMH is now on Livestream, as is WBNS.

As of today, in nearby markets, WKYC has been added to NewsOn.

I saw that. Unfortunately, the prior newscasts are showing up with a blank screen - though live newscasts are fine.

I suspect that it will be cleared up soon. I don't know when they started recording...

WZZM is also now on NewsOn as of today, which finally provides another Grand Rapids station for the first time since WOOD was dropped.

NewsOn has done a major update to the Roku app. It is definitely MUCH BETTER than the previous incarnation.

I don't care for the update. The old app had a "live now" feature that allowed you to see every station that had a current live stream running. Looks like they've dropped that in this new incarnation.

YouTube is the Public Access Channel on Crack.

Yeah, I hadn't noticed that was missing, and hopefully, they will bring that back in a future update.

But overall, the new Roku app is MUCH better, and the interface doesn't look or act like something Fisher Price would build.
