CD Alternatives to Radio

Post by Bobbert » Sun Mar 17, 2019 8:47 am

The threads on 98.7 and 106.7 reminded me of the frustration of expecting too much from Detroit radio. So I grabbed a bunch of CDs from my dusty pile in the basement, and enjoyed some music that I will probably never hear on Detroit radio:
  • Tusk by Fleetwood Mac
  • Blood on the Tracks by Bob Dylan
  • A collection of Rod Stewart songs from his early Mercury days (before he sold his soul to become a pop star)
  • Zuma by Neil Young
  • A CD of two LPs by George Shearing—Black Satin and White Satin (the album whose sexy cover makes a nice cameo appearance in the hotel scene in Hard Day's Night)
  • A collection of Frank Sinatra singles from his Capitol Records years (1953-1960)
These albums have been good company on my 45-minute commute to work. About the only thing I've missed on radio was Dave Wagner's afternoon classical music show on WRCJ.

I listen to CD’s mostly now as well, Between my Wife and Myself we have a trunk full of discs in the car, We have the entire Level 42 collection, Talk Talk collection, Swing Out Sister collection a shitload of 60’s and 70’s Multi-Artists discs, Tears For Fears discs, Everything But The Girl collection, and more Multi-Artists stuff from the 80’s, So we’re set on music, Now naturally we don’t leave these in car but we have them in a protected cases that is moved back in forth, We have to much money invested in these discs and most of them are not available anymore. And over half are imported products.

The pop group Swing Out Sister are from England and they were very popular in the mid 80’s.

Swing Out Sister were popular on the US AC charts in the latter 80's and throughout the 90's. A girl group from the UK, whose biggest hits were "Breakout" and their cover of Barbara Acklin's "Am I the Same Girl". The latter song was notable in that the original version, written by the lead singer of the Chi Lites, was a big hit WITHOUT the vocals, becoming Young-Holt Unlimited's "Soulful Strut".

They did quite a few songs from '85 and continued into the 2ks.

I really have far more vinyl than I do CD's, but I find an unused Android cell phone makes a handy jukebox. The ZTE phones had a Dolby app with a nice volume normalizing equalizer on them, which, when used with Foobar2000, makes a great jukebox. The nice thing about Foobar2000 is that if you have Foobar2000 on your PC, you can stream to the phone and even use upnp plug-in to control the FB2K app on the PC from the cell phone, via wifi or Bluetooth.

An older 100 disc CD changer always does the trick though!
