Changes for Detroit television

Post by Deleted User 7620 » Mon Apr 01, 2019 5:52 am

In the most shocking move since 1994, WJBK and WWJ not only agreed to do an ownership swap, they agreed to a network swap as well.

As a result, WJBK is now back to CBS and is now a CBS O&O. WWJ is now a Fox O&O. Fox is going to restart a newscast by 2020.

WJBK and WKBD will now share facilities.

Very exciting, indeed!

Oh and btw, Happy April Fools Day! Haha

More noteworthy is the Broadcast Radio Spectrum Auction, to clear 7 or 14MHz of spectrum in the FM broadcast band, for new instrument landing systems for package delivery drones.

WJR and WUOM have already agreed to split proceeds from the auction of WJR's Class A spectrum, which will be used by several stations in the eastern US.

WJR and WUOM will share the 91.7 frequency. Listeners will use the balance control to select their station. WUOM will be on 91.7-Left, while WJR will be on 91.7-Right.

Estimated auction values range from $ 83,000,000 for WKTU to $ 14.90 for WTIQ in Manistique, Michigan.

In addition to sharing FM channels, stations have the option of selling their spectrum outright, switching from FM to AM or Longwave, and AM stations could receive cash payouts for switching from AM to Longwave.

The number of stations switching to Longwave will determine whether Longwave stations will use the 9kHz spacing as in Europe, or 7kHz spacing if very many stations accept lucrative payouts to switch to Longwave.
