Ah citizens need to control the process. Having political parties draw the maps was a nightmare.

They simply squeezed as many minorities into as few districts as possible thus diluting their power. Stay classy.

It’s been said without the districts drawn the way they were , state Dems would not have won the state house and senate in 2022. So, now the request is to go back to racially gerrymandered districts.

Does this put the Dem majorities at stake in the 2024 elections?

We all need to understand both sides love to gerrymander to their advantage every 10 yrs. that’s why the Ballot referendum wanted it put to the people in a more balanced way. Tear up all that hard work because a certain demographic did not get their desired allocation in their district.

Going to highly racially gerrymandered districts mean those candidates running in those districts need only demagogue to that particular racial group, and not campaign to a more diverse set of constituents.

This puts us further down the road to destructive identity politics.

And it says those of a “racial group X” only have the mindset or capability to vote in lockstep for a candidate of their own racial group, denies them the agency and independent thinking that is deserved and needed in these highly polarized times.

Moreover, if the districts were wrongly drawn up in 2021, and will be corrected for 2024, does that mean every piece of legislation passed in 2022 by said wrongly placed legislators be re-voted on in the state house and senate by newly elected members?

Cmon, if,you’re gonna force a do-over, let’s do-over everything.

Understood. It was as a result of a 2018 statewide ballot referendum to have non-partisan citizens redraw districts.

Then a certain group complains that the new boundaries weren’t drawn to their preferences and affinity groups. Complaints are loud enough that three original (frustrated) commissioners resign, and new ones (that will conform to the desired goal )are ushered in.

What was a hot topic of discussion on AM910 back when it was local talk, during discussion of the boundaries was that black voting power was diluted by blacks leaving city of Detroit, saying I’ve had enough of this, and leaving for southfield, royal oak, Ferndale, etc.

The process will get better, they did ok first try out of the box.

I’ll agree and hope so.

I know a family member who worked the census and knocked door to door in Detroit city neighborhoods. It was difficult to get folks to answer the door and participate. I felt bad upon hearing this, as the city needs an accurate count of all Detroit residents for the census (regardless of race) and for representation and for federal grants, school funding, etc. this family member and the other census workers found this frustration frequently.
