I think you and others are confusing praise for just stating the obvious. What I've heard is less "praising" or "taking his side" and more just stating the obvious that Putin outsmarted (at least thus far) everybody.

The only direct threat of withholding support to the Ukraine that I remember came from Joe Biden. He admitted to it.
