Fm translators
Fm translators
Does anyone know when and if FM translators for Lansing AM stations such as WVFN WXLA WJIM will be going on air? I know all of these made apps for FM freqs. I thought they were approved. I could be wrong.

They’re working on a rebuild at KAAY, so they’re spending money. They just finished the WJRW build out.

Re: Fm translators
Jut seems Lansing moves a bit slow...107-7 on in Midland(picked it up with Sangean portable radio in Hemlock when visiting earlier in spring)..Detroit and Grand Rapids with a lot of translator action...good or bad....our two FM's translators here in Alaska came on quickly...Lansing behind the times...but WFMK rolls on

WJRW is owned by Cumulus.
WVFN is owned by Townsquare.

It's had to keep track of all the changes. Some of those translator applications go that far back, to when they were coowned.

Re: Fm translators

Re: Fm translators
In the History Card for WVIC...WVFN, it shows that WGN objected to the application for 730. Not may details, so I don’t know how it was resolved. WITL 1010 was close to WCFL...WMVP overlap also. But the higher frequency allowed WITL to send their signal West, and next to nothing to the East.fairbankshockeypuck wrote: ↑Mon Apr 08, 2019 1:29 amRemember listening at WVIC 730 as a kid....had a nice top 40 format and a great daytime signal

Re: Fm translators
Lansing g area AM's pretty useless at night...10-15 miles north and the were gone in my hey day...WVFN goes like six city blocks with their really reduced power...1240 not much better and 1320 seem to be the best of the three...
Detroit Tigers lucky to have the FM out of Alma/St Louis broadcasting their games....
WSGW on a side seems to have a better signal west towards Hemlock these days...still sis listens to Alma St Louis for better quality

Re: Fm translators
Apparently WJIM 1240 AM is now simulcasting on 106.9 FM (W295BP Haslett). Last I checked, this was one of the trio of Air1 drones in the market (90.9 and 95.9 being the other two). Not sure if this is permanent, a temporary measure until 107.7 gets built, or even due to technical difficulties with the Air1 feed (although 90.9 and 95.9 are still broadcasting Air1 with no hitches). Interestingly, I noticed 106.9 carrying Smile FM (like they need another Lansing signal) a few months ago.
Re: Fm translators
Meanwhile, WITL has added an HD3 with Air1.
Re: Fm translators
Something is now beating the crap out of WHMI 93.5 on the south end of Lansing.

Likely the former. EMF leases a number of their translators. Their 100.3 translator in downtown Lansing is leased to WWSJ 1580. My guess is that Townsquare is leasing 106.9 on an interim basis until the 107.7 translator is up and running. Had a chance to check it out on my way home from Meridian Mall yesterday. The current WJIM feed on 106.9 sounds like it's being picked up on an AM demod tuned to 1240. Chances are they'll upgrade it to a better-sounding IP feed at some point.
My car radio doesn't have an aux input for audio, so I bought a Bluetooth FM transmitter off eBay a couple years back. It's been tuned to 107.7 since I've had it. Looks like I may need to find a new frequency to park it on soon.
At least Smile FM is a locally-focused operation. Personally, I think they do a pretty good job. Certainly better than the EMF-programmed translators that offer no local content whatsoever.Interestingly, I noticed 106.9 carrying Smile FM (like they need another Lansing signal) a few months ago.
Shortwave is the ORIGINAL satellite radio.
Re: Fm translators
I find 87.9 works pretty well for mine - the only thing it has to battle there is other bluetooth transmitters and the occasional pirate.Calvert DeForest wrote: ↑Thu Jun 27, 2019 9:05 am

Re: Fm translators
I have no issue with Smile's programming. Their personalities are good, and they certainly are not cookie-cutter musically. They have a much bigger gold library than you'll find on K-Love, FLR, etc. I'd almost call them a CCM version of "Jack." I just don't understand the need for multiple signals with identical coverage areas in markets like Alpena or Petoskey. Much of the Lansing area can also pick up 88.5 as well as 88.1 (I know 88.5 extends a tad farther west but it still seems like a lot of overlap to me). It seems to me some of those duplicate signals would be a good place for the Positive Country format they have on 103.7 in the Thumb. I will admit Smile is not nearly as bad as EMF in that regard.Calvert DeForest wrote: ↑Thu Jun 27, 2019 9:05 amChris1980 wrote: ↑Mon Jun 24, 2019 9:15 pmApparently WJIM 1240 AM is now simulcasting on 106.9 FM (W295BP Haslett).
