Stopped MSU from winning the B10 in 1963 and going to the Rose Bowl. Roger Lopez hadn't been stopped for a loss the entire 63 season until he met Mr. Butkus who constantly drilled him throughout the final game of the season. Game was originally scheduled to be played on Nov. 24 but rescheduled for Thanksgiving day, the following Thursday because of the JFK assasination.

"Dick was an animal. I called him a maniac. A stone maniac. He was a well-conditioned animal, and every time he hit you, he tried to put you in the cemetery, not the hospital."

— Deacon Jones, Pro Football Hall of Fame defensive end
The name and his image was synonymous with da Bears every time I heard the name or saw him on TV during my misspent youth.

May he rest in peace.
