Can we do it? Can we pull this off somehow? On side kick?
No.

Naturally, these assholes lose by 3 points.

Gee, maybe they should've tried kicking field goals on 4th down on both occasions in the second half.

That Gibbs fumble is probably what screwed the Lions the most, though. Too bad because he had a great game until that point.

Very disappointed, I think I would have rather watched the Lions get blown out then have them start so fast and eventually wilt....
Damn what a disappointing evening, not even remotely interested in watching the Super Bowl....

Players really blew it in the 2nd half, but so did the coaching staff. That was utterly horrible clock management inside of 2 minutes. At the 2 minute warning, I was thinking to myself 2 things:

1 - they can not, under any circumstance, call any of those timeouts.
2 - they have to score with about a minute left (or better).

So what do they do? Run it on 3rd down and have to call a timeout.

24-7. But who's counting.

I didn't even see the 24-7 score. I had some shit going on in the house and had to walk away a few times. That just kills me even more.

I’m not even angry. More like crestfallen. After the bomb that bounced off our guys helmet I thought, β€œuh oh.” And then Gibbs fumbled to start the next drive and I knew. Like a dream that was melting away before your eyes.

I’d rather have gotten beat 50-0. You can live with being overmatched. But to have two hands on the trophy and for the team who never gets there to be so close. All I could say was, β€œman, just not like this.” The city deserved to win. The fans deserved to win. This is a hard way to go.

I won't say I'm "angry" either, but to play a nearly flawless first half and then even hold SF to a field goal to start the third quarter and then melt down the way they did, it was just frustrating to watch.

Let's call that second half what it was - an epic choke job. Given the stakes, that is arguably the worst this team has choked in its entire existence.

I was worried going into the playoffs that Campbell being allergic to field goals might ultimately be this team's demise. And sure enough it was. If Detroit takes the 3 points in the 3rd quarter to put them back up 17 I think we have a very different outcome.

I'm not defending Campbell, but he trusts his players. If Reynolds catches either ball that was perfectly thrown, maybe there is a different outcome. Gibbs doesn't fumble. Crazy bounce on the Ayuuk catch. Different outcome, perhaps. Going on 4th is Campbell. I'll blame Reynolds first.
But they did gag it away.

Same. Old. Lions.

I get it, and I don't have a problem with them going for 4th downs frequently. But situation matters. And Campbell seems to lack situational awareness at times with regards to 3 points being very beneficial relative to the risk of not converting on 4th down. And tonight's 3rd quarter decision was one of those times. Being up 17 was as good as being up 21 at that point in the game, but being up only 14 and giving SF the ball with good field position was too risky. Not to mention, it puts you right back to where you were at halftime, except now half of the 3rd quarter is gone too.

Honestly, I'd rather seem them be a team that goes for 2 point conversions on every TD in the first half if it also meant they'd kick field goals when the situation called for it.

It was the wrong decision. But he hasn't trusted his kicker in 2 years. He wasn't gonna change now.
