First Red Wings Game at LCA - TONS of empty seats!

Post by MWmetalhead » Sun Sep 24, 2017 9:22 am

I realize it's only a preseason game - on a day where the mercury exceeded 90 degrees and where much more interest lies in college football - but I would've guessed that the first EVER Red Wings game at Little Caesars Arena would draw a large crowd.

Instead, it appeared 1/2 to perhaps as much as 2/3 (!!!) of the seats were EMPTY throughout the game.

If the Pistons and Wings thought playing in a new building this year would improve attendance figures, yesterday afternoon's Red Wings game serves to suggest that such thinking may hold zero water.

Will be interesting to see what the attendance figures look like a couple weeks into the regular season for the Wings and Pistons.

Its a bit disingenuous to insinuate that a preseason game when its unseasonably warm and a game time that conflicted with BOTH B1G schools football games is a harbinger of what is to come. I don't suspect the Wings will have attendance issues this year. They didn't last year, and now they have a shiny new toy in LCA.

I don't always agree with Matt...in fact its less than a coin toss but I agree here.
I only know one season ticket holder and she was trying to sell hers to the game on Facebook.
I think a lot of season ticket holders are willing to wait for the regular season to show up. I don't know what percentage of total tickets are season but I imagine a pretty good amount.

It happened again during the regular season opener. Tony Paul of the Detroit News wrote about it.

The reason? Fans were too busy checking out attractions on the concourse. I suppose that's a reasonable explanation. Reportedly, nearly every sold ticket was accounted for at the turnstyle.

In my opinion there isn't a problem until ticket holders don't go to the game or tickets go unsold. If the Wings "stink" then come January there will be empty seats just like the Pistons have faced for years.

I cannot speak for the Red Wings, but Pistons single game prices are absurd!!! Seats that used to cost $55 or $60 at the Palace now cost $80.

Would be nice if the lazy media would do a full comparison of ticket prices between the old venue vs. LCA.

Everything I've read (on Yelp and similar sites) says the upper bowl seats are a complete clusterfuck with insufficient leg room, horrible cup holders, and dangerous stairs.

In certain lower bowl sections, access to the concourse is reportedly difficult.

Parking is outrageously expensive if you park next door.

I don't believe for a split second that reported attendance figures represent the # of people going thru the turn style. People are choosing not to use their tickets.

All-in-all, the consensus is that LCA is a big downgrade from the Palace - it's a lot more expensive, inconvenient, and not as comfortable.

Remember this conceptual (and very hideous looking) design for what ultimately became LCA?

THANK GOD this proposed design never saw the light of day!!

So you think the original Olympia was ugly?

No, because it looked authentic. Wasn't exactly eye candy, but it wasn't ugly.

This proposed design was a bastardization of the original. A glorified pole barn.

The original looked..... unique for lack of a politer term... it wasn’t as plain or straight as the concept above but the basic design was about the same.

I went to the game vs the Bruins on Dec. 11th. I made it a point while watching the game to watch the seats. I would say for the most part, the seats were about 75% full overall, throughout late in the 1st period and through the 2nd. By the 3rd period, it was down to around 50% full. But most of the empty seats were in the lower bowl. The upper areas were mostly full. I sat in the Labatt's Blue Club area at the Red Wing end of the arena and it was full.
