On February 14 ,2019 it will be The Riff’s 48th year of being Detroit’s Home of Rock’n Roll it’s just amazing that The Riff has survived many ownership changes,Personalities,Management and the whole landscape changes in Detroit Radio this station is only a few if any that hung around and still have fair ratings how many stations in the USA have survived If you know of any please share.

WDAI and WPLJ have not lasted in their 2-14-71 format. That is the effective date of the call letter changes. There are all sorts of disputes about the call letter mixup stories.

I guess originally the WRIF calls were going to Chicago and WDAI for Detroit it was Detroit Auto Industry but apparently the FCC screwed up the applications.

Someone has done an extensive paper on this. I'll find the link again.

Here is one.

Seems like there are more exhaustive papers also.

I was a 17-year-old Grade Twelve student at Hon. J.C. Patterson Collegiate Institute (high school) here in Windsor when the Riff hit the airwaves, and was one of the few black kids who listened to Phil Foreman and the boys, including of course, the Poobah himself,Arthur Penhallow. (Wonder where the now about 75-year-old Artie P. is today? ) Hopefully,we'll be giving WRIF a big golden anniversary salute Feb.14,2021!!!!!

Really, what is offered now is unlistenable noise. Whatever they had was a LONG time ago. Rock is DEAD.

By the way, K. M. Richards commented that Paul Harvey would not be heard on any of the ABC owned FM stations. But he was on WLAV-FM, another of the original ABC FM Network Love stations, and he was extemely popular there.

Fet-500,MUSIC (real music, that is) is dead, replaced by EDM, bro-country,(c)rap and talent-free girl pop. When the Riff bounced onto the airwaves,I couldn't have imagined the musical "choices" to which I and others of my generation (and every lover of good music) would be subjected by late 2018.
