WHNE 14.12

Post by Splouge » Sun Aug 25, 2019 11:25 am

WHNE's Heartland stream on 14.12 is really compressed. It's a darn shame too because I really like the Red Green Show. It's still watchable, but only slightly. They should really allocate more bits to Heartland and less to those infomercial channels. Or just remove 14.10, it just simulcasts 14.2 anyway. Removing the pointless simulcast would certainly be easier on their encoder.

Well, till next time, keep your stick on the ice!

The solution is MPEG4 AVC H.264. Most newer TV's decode it and the even the $30 newer converter boxes decode and DVR in it. WBFF in Baltimore is starting to use it.
WHNE could get 12 channels easy into their 6MHz with it.

I don't even know what the bitrates are now, on any of the channels, but 14.12 definitely has to be under 0.4 Mbps. And I know HSN 2, JTV, SBN, and The Bob are definitely eating up more bits than they need.

They should have half the channels (preferably 14.3, .4, .5, .8, .10, and .11) run at 0.8 Mbps, and the rest run at 1.8 Mbps. Or run them all at 1.3 Mbps. But I'm getting carried away, I don't run the station.

I am not so sure mapping one stream to multiple virtual channels eats up bandwidth.

There is a Class A broadcasting on VHF-lo in the Milwaukee area. Take a look at their STA filings. Startling stuff. I think on the most recent one, they were seeking an increase from 4.5 kW all the way to 15 kW due to continued reception issues.

Channel 14 is a total waste since most of the metro Detroit area can't receive it anyway and wait until they move it to RF 3 it will be lucky to be recieved 2 blocks away.
I'm quite familiar with the people that operate WHNE. I know for a fact that the station has viewers from Algonac to Ann Arbor, so if you're having issues watching WHNE in metro Detroit, it must be that you don't have a antenna pointed in the right direction or a poor TV system.

You might need to upgrade whatever you have instead of complaining that the whole metro can't receive the station, just because you can't.

I was watching Red Green on Heartland today, and the picture quality actually looked better.

The WHNE rf20 signal has improved dramatically in the last year or so ,even though they are a low power designate. Not a bad selection of fringe diginet's that you would likely not see.I do watch Retro,LightTV and Get on occasion.I miss the drive inn classics channel looks like it bit the dust.

As for Red Green on Heartland....it looks like theyre showing the first version of the show from CHCH.I liked the later version that was more polished and funnier than the first.WCMU PBS was showing that one for awhile when I could pick up WCMZ on rf28.

If your a fan of the canadian show Heartland.....its being shown on Heartland 14.12, LightTV 14.1 and the new season soon on CBC9. A bit of Heartland overkill if you ask me.Good show though..........

F**K Trudeau and F**K CBC !!!!

I've been able to make Heartland look better on my Insignia TV by adjusting the picture settings. What I did was increase brightness, contrast, and color all to 65% of the maximum setting; while decreasing sharpness to 30% of the maximum setting to make the artifacts less visible. You also want to turn on noise reduction if available, and turn off dynamic contrast.

One thing I should warn you about is that Insignia TVs' contrast setting seems to be more of a brightness adjuster than contrast, at least when compared to Magnavox. If you watch Heartland at all on WHNE, and have a different brand of TV, just play around with the picture settings til you find what's right for you.

No issues here in Sterling Heights, I get WHNE perfectly with a signal strength of 80/100

90% of programming on Heartland (14.12) appears to be reruns of obscure shows from The Nashville Network (TNN) from the early 90's.

Who the hell wants to watch that? I think I'd rather watch the infomercial and home shopping channels!

All 12 subs on WHNE are a waste they should call it WASTE TV 14, sort of reminds me of the Weird Al movie from the 80’s called UHF is Weird Al running WHNE?
They do have GetTV, I don't think that's a waste

Have you ever even watched The Red Green Show? It's absolutely hilarious! He's like Tim Taylor if he was Canadian, and inbred! But, they do have all the episodes on the show's official YouTube channel.
