Billboard Top 600 Hits 1958-2018

Never saw this list before. Billboard All Time Top 600 1958-2018.

Like most charts, there are some criticisms. Like overreliance on the number of weeks at #1 in Billboard's lists, and not recognizing that a lot of these statistics are related to the number of releases and charted tracks in given years and eras and decades. One very positive thing is not limiting entries favoring more recent tracks over older tracks, and limiting lists to a very artificial 100, which highlights such limitations that other charts have.

But I feel that the Rolling Stone Top 500 has GLARING OMISSIONS AND QUESTIONABLE INCLUSIONS based on the personal preferences of the committee that came up with the charts. And they are very Hard Rock/AOR artist oriented.

Charts like the Northern Soul Top 500 are esoteric, including the most obscure and early tracks of artists who often became very popular later. Those MAY or MAY NOT be their best work.

Some entries on some charts are thumbs up on many chart entries. Other entries are very slanted, inviting thumbs down by many.

Although it has limitations, this chart is one of the fairest overall that I have seen.

Is THAT where they got the idea for the 486-SX?

Doing some statistical analysis, there is another limitation.

The 1960s should have 120 of the Top 600 from a statistical standpoint, The 1960s are seen as the Golden Age of Popular Music, and yet there are many fewer than even the 90 which the text sequence "196" reveals. This is clearly because of the sheer number of releases that made the Hot 100 in the 1960s, and the resultant short chart runs.

There are many songs which barely grazed the Top 10, let alone #1, which are/were bigger hits than the #1s, at least in the long run. And regional hits which were played and were big in Michigan and/or the Midwest, are nonexistent. These are played on some of the better Oldies stations such as WCXI, WJMK, and WGVU/WGVS. Album Rock, Classic Rock, and even Classic Hits stations overrepresent the appeal and popularity of many tracks, but pervade the FM dial in many areas.

Hard to take a list like this seriously when Michael Jackson's highest-ranked song is at #86 and Madonna's at #121. I'm sorry, but Carly Rae Jepson's "Call Me Maybe" does not belong ranked above each and every MJ/Madonna song ever released.

And "Too Close" by Next ranked at #30??? I can't even remember the last time I've heard that song on any radio station.

As I pointed out, there are limitations in comparing statistics from decade to decade. I'm just glad to see a fresh air alternative to the RS 500, which is TOTALLY UNSCIENTIFIC. This is at least backed up by Billboard's research, which was ever changing along with the times.

Personally, I think the NS 500 is interesting also, for a starting point for obscure groups that deserve attention.

This is probably a list of songs I've deleted from my record collection in a violent manner!
