Kiss FM 105.9
Kiss FM 105.9
I do love Older R&B like many of us here in The “D” now we have 3 stations in town that mix older tunes with more of the recent songs ,now when Radio One did Classic Soul on the 99.9 translator ,I thought they were spot on with that format even though it wasn’t local. So Radio One Why Don’t you do a Classic Soul format on 105.9 or even better a heritage station like 107.5 with the history both stations had here in Detroit with music from that era there should be no problem ,Great people came out of both stations, WJZZ had Larry “Doc” Elliott and Rosetta Hines and WGPR had Electrifying Mojo a.k.a.Charles Johnson, It could work .

Classic Soul on 99.9 was fantastic! It even sounded awesome on AM 1200. Something about that was as you say "spot on", even with the other R&B stations in town. (Off-topic, but that's the same reason I like The Breeze so much, it's AC but not the same AC.) I'd be with you if that format was brought back on some station in town.

I like Kev's post and agree with what he wrote.
Hot 107.5 is a disaster. They are the lowest rated full-signaled FM Urban station in Metro Detroit by far. They are also the poorest billing full-signaled FM station now that Praise 102.7 is no more. A number of FM stations in GRAND RAPIDS generate more advertising revenue than Hot 107.5.
I think moving 107.5 to Classic Soul - especially a station that features a lot of crossover hits that would appeal to Caucasians and African Americans alike - would be a terrific move.
105.9 almost never plays Classic Soul anymore and is dipping more & more into hip-hop hits of the 90's & early 00's (granted, not the type of abrasive hip-hop that 107.5 plays). In terms of song separation, there would be plenty of room between 105.9 and a Classic Soul station at 107.5. I don't think a Classic Soul station would step on 105.9's toes too harshly.
Not only has 105.9 ditched most of its Classic Soul, but one almost never hears any classic soul or motown on 104.3 anymore. Perhaps they play one such song every hour to 90 minutes.

I would love a full time format like "Old School Saturday" was on 107.5. That was must-listen radio when I used to work mandatory OT on Saturdays. I don't really mind a lot of the old school hip hop being played, but not at the expense of the classic R&B. But I guess it's no different than classic rock stations moving younger in the demos, too. I will say that I've preferred 105.9 to 92.3 through the years.

It was OSS that piqued my interest in electronic and early 80s hip hop. I'd love to see a return to that format. Won't find it on any nationally owned stations. Bring back local ownership of 107.5 and return to that format.

I agree in theory. However, I see a road block similar to what happened with 105.1 years ago. Too white for black people, and too black for white people. That was an issue that format had nationwide.
