Odd Double Bills

Post by sfpcc » Wed Jan 11, 2017 4:13 am

Can anyone out there think of some odd double bills they've heard of or seen? I can think of two:

About ten years ago 38 Special and Ziggy Marley played on the same bill at the Phoenix Center, (I can't remember the full name, it's in Pontiac.)

In 1978 The Jam Opened four dates for Blue Oyster Cult, (Be Bop Deluxe were also on some of those bills.)

In that same year Japan opened an English Tour for B.O.C.

Also in that same year The Ramones opened a few dates for Black Sabbath. On some dates it was Black Sabbath, Van Halen, and The Ramones.

My first big rock show, circa 12/73 at Masonic Temple in Detroit, featured Strawbs, King Crimson, and Slade.

Which of these things is not like the others?

I would have loved to have seen The Jam in concert.

When I saw B.O.C in 1992, (awhile past the arena years) They played Todd's (yeah I know it used to be a gay bar.) The opening act was Psychofunkepus, a little remembered early 90's funk band. Despite the audiences apathy they were really good.

(after the show I sort of talked to the bass player who was tying his shoe. I said "good show" and he said "thanks." I didn't have the courage to ask him why wasn't he playing for his own audience?)

Pixies opening for U2 or Peter Murphy opening for Widepread Panic. Both were train wrecks. I never thought jam band hippies could heckle that well.

In general, comedians opening for rock acts is another weird combo.

Listening to Bela Lugosi's Dead while high sound like a scary thing to do.

I read somewhere that before Welcome Back Kotter Gabe Kaplan opened for Dave Mason.

I thought it was interesting Kool & The Gang opening for Van Halen.
