That is a NPR station today, if I'm not mistaken. What years was it a top 40 station? Who owned it and who were some of the jocks? You only seem to hear about WTRU or the glory days of Sunny-FM when it comes to Muskegon top 40.

You are correct that is an NPR station now. It was a Top 40 from the time it went on the air in 1975 until sometime in the late 70's. At the time I worked there 1975-78, the owner was Ralph Treiger out of Chicago. He was the national sales manager at WCFL in Chicago, and moonlighted as a station owner in Whitehall/Muskegon. We simulcast the FM with the AM on 1490. During this time I was the program director. Jocks on the station for most of the time I was there, consisted of Dan Mason aka Daniel Boone, who did morning drive. Dan is now ops manager of a Clear Channel News/Talk station I believe in Reno, Nevada. Afternoon drive was handled by John Beyrle, who is now the United States ambassador to Russia. John Alan did the night shift. John is now chief engineer of Citadel Grand Rapids. Other jocks on the station during this era were Dennis Cavender, who later went to work for WMUS and for stations in Saginaw and Traverse City, Rick Lambert, who later went on to program KLOL in Houston. Jim Curcuru, who went into radio sales after his air days were over. Chris Roberts, who had a long career at WMUS. Bob "Maniac" Simonson, now owner of WEEH in Hart/Mears and Tom Kelly who later in life owned his own station too. We had lots of good people working there, and it was a kick-ass Top 40 station. Unfortunately the owner really had no working capital and when Regional broadcasters (Owners of WTRU) made him a monetary offer to keep us from making their station obsolete, he caved in and sold it to them. Now that I have totally hi-jacked this thread, what other great songs don't we hear on the radio anymore.

"Ah Leah" enjoyed some rotation on WHMI but I haven't heard it there in a couple of months.

Let's see...
"Dream Police" - Cheap Trick.
"Epic" - Faith No More has made somewhat of a resurgence on Q106 and I heard it recently once on WWBN, I think.

actually..... Doug FM plays all 3 of those tunes.

i heard "Dream Police" when i was listening on-line sunday morning. :smokin

Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond was played quite a bit in 1970. You don't hear it much today though.

You hardly ever hear "Solitary Man" or "Shilo" by Neil Diamond anymore, other than on WOAP.

Hey how come no old Jefferson Starship!

I remember the WRIF playing "Stranger" and "Laying It On the Line"

I also WIOT playing "Eye in the Sky" by the Alan Parsons Project, including that weird beginning that you used to hear being played on ESPN frequently. :lol

Perhaps it's because some of those songs do not stand up to the test of time?
I'm not saying anything in particular about those songs listed in this topic, but I know some songs I used to love when I was
a kid really sound like crap as an adult. I mean sound like crap in several ways,, lousy song, lousy recording, bad playing etc..

Other stuff I dismissed as a kid I love now. Other things I grew to like once I started playing musical instruments.

Other than that, I'd say it's just because radio sucks for the most part. It's hard for me to find something to listen to in the morning
that doesn't annoy me. I did hear 92.7 The Van out of Holland, Mi this morning, and they have a new morning guy, (or old guy in a new position)
Ed Verschur.. if he is choosing what to play I'll probably like that as well as anything. I used to love WEVS.

I think I surfed onto some syndicatd station where the two guys and a girl were pathetic. Sad laugh track, stupid jokes.. the usual crap.. didn't stay long enough to hear their names. One of th eguys had a real deep voice that sounds like he's smoked for years.. good voice for radio, stupid mornign show though. Kevin Mattews has sucked lately IMO, not that he's probably changed.. it's probably me.
