Online Tax Services

Post by Deleted User 4520 » Wed Feb 06, 2019 12:15 pm

I have used TurboTax for over a decade. I'm kinda irritated with them. They advertise filing for "free". But in order to claim the retirement credit from your 401k, you have to pay $39.99 for the deluxe in order to claim it. I think that is a bit underhanded. Do any of you use online tax services/software? If so, which ones? I haven't taken my taxes to a tax preparer in many years.

Nooope.
I use an actual person to do my taxes and they charge me only 50 dollars to do it all!
It is an old family friend though

I thought about starting them soon since the government might shutdown again.

We have ours done by a professional every year and Canada Revenue Agency is still constantly on my case, making my life miserable.

The only time they leave me alone is when I'm here in Florida. They don't know how to find me.

When I get home in the spring, my mailbox will be stuffed with their hate mail and death threats.

Most years I've used the H&R Block software. They usually mail me the CD in December. One year I used Turbo Tax and Block gave me the following year's software for free. Haven't loaded this year's software yet, but the cost for the Home edition has been around $30-35 (I think they give a small price break to returning customers). The ability to import the previous year's return is a nice advantage. Saves a lot of typing.

I've never tried the actual online services, but from what I've heard most of the free options are bare-bones. Basically the equivalent of a 1040EZ. That's great if you just plan to take the standard deduction, but not so great if you have a lot to itemize. Once they get you started on your return it's easier to sell the "extras" since you've already into it. At least with my software I pay the cost up front and that's it.
