450 kW from Bonaire

Post by phillyb » Tue Jan 30, 2018 12:18 pm

Those of us who DXed back in the 1970s and 80s remember PJB-800, the 500,000 watt flamethrower on 800 kHz which Trans World Radio opeerated. I can remember PJB regularly shredded CLKW at night here in Western Michigan back in the day. It had an almost-local quality signal many nights.

PJB retired the 500 kilowatt flamethrower by about 1990. But now, it's coming back. As revealed in an article in RADIO WORLD, TWR is installing a brand-new 450 kilowatt AM transmitter on Bonaire.

This will be directional, however, aimed at the Caribbean and South America. So I don't expect it to be armchair copy the way PJB was. Nevertheless,it should make something of a DX target for those of us stateside...

Ask not what your country can do FOR you; ask what they are about to do TO YOU!!

Here, in the Tampa Bay area of Florida, at about 0523 GMT there isn't a sound of it. But I'll keep trying in the coming days.

They beam toward Cuba every night from 0000 GMT to 0400 GMT. The broadcast is in Spanish. I've been trying for it here in Florida and tonight I can hear Spanish buried among several other signals on 800 KHZ. No positive ID yet but I'll keep trying.
