DTE does suck btw. I had a problem with lights flickering only in my bathroom. I ignored it but the DTE guy came to our neighborhood and when I went out to get the mail, he asked about flickering lights. He said that our house was on two transformers or something. I don't understand how that works but it was really weird.

Yes, DTE is the worst power company around, second perhaps to PG&E in California.

Km1125 had a good post on the SE Michigan board with regard to how their tree trimming program usually bypasses areas not easily accessible from streets, which explains a lot of the tree damage-related issues.

Lansing finally seems to have gotten the attention of DTE's executive management in a meaningful way. The "smart" circuit rerouting technology is something they should've implemented already. Better late than never, I suppose. Hopefully they follow thru with their promised investments over the next five years.

I grew up in the GR area with Consumers as the power company. During the Memorial Day weekend derecho of 1998, never lost power. I can think of scores of horrible lightning storms where outages lasted only a few seconds. In fact, I can think of only 2 instances in the entire decade of the 90s where an outage exceeded 24 hours, and I cannot think of a single outage that exceeded 48 hours.

Since we went to this technology in the Traverse City area, our outages are very infrequent. We lost power for 8 days 12 years ago when we had a straight line wind roll through. Today that same scenario would result in a few hours of outage.
