Back in 1947 when they first came up with the plan to be able to allow direct dialing without an operator across the US and Canada, Detroit had a lot more clout than it does today. SE Michigan received the 4th easiest area code to dial on a rotary phone, behind NYC (212), LA (213), and Chicago (312) and arguably the second easiest to remember / not get confused with another behind 212.
Personally, I like tomorrow better. I mean, who doesn't like pie?

My dad worked for Michigan Bell/Ameritech, and I remember when they had an open house introducing the (8I0) area code as well as (248). I want to say that was 1990.
