It's a mystery to me, how you're able to get an ID on all of those. Most FM stations nowadays, instead of using their call letters, identify with some silly name or brand. Country 92. Rock 107. The Duck. The Moose, etc

I started out with nothing and I still have most of it.

Shouldn't be much of a mystery. I just do a quick search in the WTFDA database. Takes maybe 10-30 seconds. Otherwise, I know a lot of those stations in Minnesota as they are common Lake Superior lake tropo from the Porcupine Mts. and Copper Harbor, such as International Falls (99.5 is a big one with religious talk), Bemidji, Grand Rapids, Duluth, etc. The others give very clear clues such as events, city names, local ads, etc.

100.5 was the hardest as they IDed with "New Country, _ 100.5" with a man saying the first half and women singing the second half. There's only ONE country station in the region on that frequency and almost no other stations aside from translators, so it was pretty obvious; a listen to their stream gave me the second half of that ID, "Kickin' Country 100.5" sung by the same women I heard after about 20 minutes of listening.

Because my recorder sometimes interferes with the radio signals or weakens them, I often only record once I've heard something of interest, so I missed some of those things and just wrote them down instead.

You don't need any call letters when everything is in the databases and in Google.

Don't worry. You wouldn't have gotten in on any of it. It was elevation dependent on the lake. Nothing was noted in Manistee, Elberta and Frankfort, etc. Just typical Wausau, Northwoods, Milwaukee, Madison, etc. Just like my scans at Copper Harbor. Atop Brockway was very active with that elevation. Below was pretty darn dead. Lake of the Clouds was another very high location along the water that got much more distance, but it is still pretty recent and I have a backlog of 25 scans to deal with, so it's not online. That site also butted right against the Dakota border.

All that long DX from the top of the Dunes or Brockway mountain, not too suprizing, why do you suppose they put the FM transmitting antennas on those big, tall, towers ?? ;D

The most impressive is getting KBGY around WCCW and WDUZ

107.5 looked like this pretty much all evening:

WCCW / 40dBµ, stereo / local
WCCN / 20dBµ, mono in easy null
KBGY / 20dBµ, mono still in rather easy null

No sign of WDUZ, which is 100 miles away and much lower power than WCCN, though WDUZ at other sites can be pretty potent. Green Bay signals didn't perform well at all there. Just the big ones like Star 98 that are semi-locals at Mackinaw even and common on the north shore of Lake Huron, and the Duke signals, etc.

I think some of those signals are there at lower elevation, but you would need a better antenna to sort them out. When FM stations in smaller markets signed off at 10 PM, 11 PM, 12 Midnight, you would be amazed at how many weaker cochannel signals popped up with full quieting, often no less than three deep. You need a receiver you can easily match to an antenna and a portable rotatable beam to fully sort those out. What amazes me about your logs is the stations that DON'T show up, that used to be easily received in Western Michigan pre 1980 or so.

I heard a lot of Minnesota stations in late August on a Sony Portable with a telescoping whip near the Gandy Dancer on the North Side of a third floor apartment balcony in 1976.

Is THAT where they got the idea for the 486-SX?

It's a good thing WCCW and WCCN have different formats!

Nice!

Did you take a battery-powered DTV set along?

Many years ago, I went to the Elberta Bluff during the ARRL June VHF contest, was pretty busy. Seems an EN64 logging was as much in demand as a P51 was to HF DXers.
