But you know what that’s their problem, How are these kids being raised? To be dependent on other people instead of themselves, Is Gen Z going to be a bunch of pussies and won’t own a car that’s really stupid especially in Detroit...
Did you build your car with your own hands, or did you depend on someone else to build it safely for you? Do you hunt and grow your own food, or did you depend on someone else to prepare it and deliver it to your grocery store for you? Do you drive on roads that someone else helped pay for and someone else build? Do you build your own computer and provide your own internet protocols, or are you trolling the Buzzboard as a result of someone else building that device and internet backbone for you?

I've said it before Chuck Davies, I like you, but give me a break with this "dependent younger generation" bullshit. All generations are just as woven into societal dependence as any other, just in different ways. I see no problem in anybody wishing for a system where they don't need a car, can reallocate their resources elsewhere, and can help the environment and attempt to alleviate heavy traffic. Options are great, it gives freedom to choose, instead of being forced into the exact same routine as someone else.

I understood the Q-Line was to be part of a much bigger system for it to be financially viable. I hope that happens one day, where every bit of progress that is attempted isn't held back by people who constantly want more of the same as the past, where it hasn't worked, or pulling the plug on an investment too early, surely wasting all the resources that went into it.

This says age 20 is 77%.

https://www.npr.org/2016/02/11/46617852 ... om-driving
Old data, I need to find the newer study, I think I found it in Hagerty's newsletter. Insurance companies are a bit concerned that their cash cow is being threatened. https://www.npr.org/2017/12/08/56836202 ... other-ways

Gen Z is a different breed than the Millenials. Very practical and very concerned about the climate that WILL disrupt their lives. Public Transportation is cheaper to maintain, uses less of a footprint (here comes the bogus science from the nutters) and easier for Urban Dwellers. As this population shifts away from rural and suburban areas, vehicle ownership becomes a hassle. Have you noticed there are no longer vehicles at the "Entry" level price point? The data tells me that Public Transportation will become increasingly popular. If you are on Facebook try to take a look at New Urbanist Memes for Transit-Oriented Teens group.

Look at where urban planning is headed...

I don't know how to break it to you but only 52% of 20 year olds in the United States have driver's licenses. The share of 16-year-olds getting their licenses has decreased by almost half since the 1980s. Generation Z does not want to drive. Should they just skip Detroit and go find a real City? Apparently all you old fools think this will not happen.
TC Talks - I suggest reading up on Uber and Lyft. That's all they need and want.
Why do you think Amazon cut Detroit in the first round? I'm sorry to break it to you but it's not simply the unions it's the general bulshit attitude that the business Community has about innovation.
LMAO!!! That whole saga was a complete farce.

Amazon was a farce, but Detroit is not competitive when it comes to business except legacy Industries like Manufacturing.

GM, Ford and other automakers know they have a tough road ahead with a changing Market.

Amazon has two distribution centers in The Detroit Area one in Shelby Township and the other I believe in Livonia, So how many more do they need in this area.

I can agree with that. In fact, I agree with that statement entirely.

Why should I pay to subsidize something I will never use? I have been to many cities in the US, and the number of empty or nearly empty trains rolling around say it isn’t just a Detroit thing.

People in Ann Arbor only go to Detroit for concerts and sporting events, and maybe the casino. There is no reason to fund a rail line between them. As was mentioned before- they drive. The same goes for the suburbs, especially Oakland County. I live in western Wayne County and almost never go to Detroit- again except for sports or to cross over to Windsor.

The suburbs have supported Detroit for far too long.

Amen, You’re spot on, When I used to work I had to use the Smart Bus twice because of car repairs, And I got to tell you it was an experience, I had to use the Van Dyke bus line and the busses were always empty and dirty, And the way I see it is why are we paying in our property tax for something that we will never use, Now I didn’t have to use the bus, I could have found other ways to work but I thought what the hell lets try it and see what it’s about, Never again will I use such a pathetic excuse for mass transit, Currently in Macomb County the Smart millage is at 1.2mills that’s $120.00 a year on a house that’s worth $200,000 that’s what I pay a year for bus service that I will never use.

People don’t want to ride trains, especially in this area. We love our cars. I also knew this would flop.
Not at all a true statement.

There are still plenty of old people around who can tell you about the intermodal and how great it really was.

#1 does the train take you to a place you need to be?
#2 is travel by train an efficient use of time?
#3 is the train less expensive?

You need to be able to answer these questions with "yes".

It think it was referenced to the Q Line itself, Not trains like Detroit to Chicago. Now does the Q Line take you where you want to go? Answer: No, That’s the issue here.

Speaking about the train to Chicago-

You could argue it does take you where you need to be. It is slower than driving so not an effective use of time. When you figure in taxpayer subsidies along with the ticket prices, it is cheaper to drive.

If a 100% private train system wants to operate, that’s a different story. I would support (but still not use) that.

To say its cheaper to drive is not universally true. To say the train is so much slower to be a waste of time is not entirely accurate either.
Lots of things come in to play....

How many people in the group?

What price was the train ticket? ($31 is the cheapest I find)

Where would you park in Chicago? If your in a downtown hotel parking ain't cheap and it sure ain't free

What kind of car are we depreciating? The cost of driving is not just gas. AAA ranges are 55 cents to 78 cents a mile last I checked

Its not realistic to factor in tax payer subsidies for train unless you do it for roads too since gas taxes haven't covered the cost of roads and bridges in decades.

If there are just one or two people going the train is cheaper than the long term cost of 280 miles on a car.
Three people can be cheaper if the train tickets are $31.

Did you know that taxpayers costs are lower with public transportation? You're going to pay more to build larger roads than a public transportation infrastructure. Speaking of those sporting events, who do you think paid for that Stadium?

I don’t think stadiums should be taxpayer subsidized either.

Show me where public transportation is cheaper, because it isn’t. You are the type who wants to cram people into small spaces in cities instead of giving people freedom to own large homes and land if they choose. You probably want to ban cars and force people to use trains and other costly, non efficient, non timely, government controlled methods to get around. Follow the government’s schedule instead of allowing people to go where they want when they want. Sorry, but I am on the side of freedom, not government control.

Your link is dead, by the way.
