In another thread, someone said
THAT’S THE BEAUTY OF FREEDOM. I GET TO DO WHAT I WANT REGARDLESS OF WHAT YOU THINK! AND YOU KNOW WHAT? YOU GET TO DO THE SAME! ISN’T FREEDOM GREAT?!
Ah, the old and ignorant “yelling FIRE in a crowded theater” argument. Yelling anything anywhere is protected by free speech.
You truly don’t understand free speech. Free speech says you can call me the n-word, faggot, lezbo, dyke, etc., but my free speech says I can call you out on it and condemn your speech.
No, Buzzboard poster extraordinaire, it is you that does not understand. Freedom does NOT give you the right to drive thru a red light with no repercussions. Freedom does not give you the right to tell lies about anyone, anything or any entity. Freedom implies respect for the rule of law. Freedom does not allow you to bully me into your way of thinking, or to make a choice that I don't choose to make. Freedom is not anarchy.
“Interesting”? That’s false advertising, but that’s your right!

Who said anything about driving through a red light? Oh yeah, you made that up and attributed it to me. You lied, but that’s your right!

Nothing has stopped you from telling lies about anyone, anything, or any entity. Why? Because it’s your right!

“Bully”? “Make a choice you don’t want to make”? Have you not read everything I’ve written on consent? I don’t force you to do anything! That’s what cops do!

Free speech is between you and the government. You walk into my place and yell fire or start causing a scene and your ass is grass...

You have no right to do either except with the government. Private property is another matter. That is precisely why you can be arrested for disporderly conduct or asked to leave and with the police doing the asking if you like...

Yelling fire in a crowded theatre is NOT protected speech by the way.
100% FALSE, but again, your ignorant speech and lies are free speech. Enjoy it!

Free speech is not between me and the government. I have certain inalienable rights that the government must recognize, but my free speech rights are mine, not because a government grants me them.

You know what’s beautiful? The same rights are yours too!!!

The First Amendment states, in relevant part, that: “Congress shall make no law...abridging freedom of speech.”

According to the ACLU: https://www.aclu.org/other/your-right-free-expression
The First Amendment guarantees our right to free expression and free association, which means that the government does not have the right to forbid us from saying what we like and writing what we like; we can form clubs and organizations, and take part in demonstrations and rallies.
According to the United States Courts: https://www.uscourts.gov/about-federal- ... /what-does
Freedom of speech does not include the right:

To incite actions that would harm others (e.g., “[S]hout[ing] ‘fire’ in a crowded theater.”).
Schenck v. United States, 249 U.S. 47 (1919).
No matter how you decide you want to interpret the law and Constitution, your assertions in the real world are wrong. The world can react to, or avoid, your "free speech" within the limits of their rights and so it doesn't harm others. I would kick you off my property in a heartbeat for simply opening your mouth. Sue me. Who do you think gave you inalienable rights of free speech, and who is the enforcer of those rights besides the government? Yourself? Why aren't these rights enforced in all nations? Take your crap to another less tolerant country, and you would run into a dangerous situation. And your response can't include the word "should" or any variation of that.
You would kick me off your property? First off, that’s a private property issue (which I feel just as passionately about), not a free speech issue, but thanks for playing!

Besides, I have no desire to visit the trailer park anyway.

I don't live in a trailer park, or anywhere near one. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Since you're so critical of people who lie, where did you come up with that doozy?
Show me where I said you live in a trailer park. I simply said I don’t have a desire to visit one. Maybe tomorrow I will. I’ll bring king prawn for dinner.

Kinda scary to think that everyone on this board votes...
That's really what it comes down to for you, fear.

You fear people will have "too much" freedom. I say we don't have enough.

You fear certain people having a voice, having a vote, and having an opinion that differs from yours. How cute.

Protect the people from the government, not the other way around. It's literally why the Constitution and Bill of Rights were written.

You've replaced knowledge, reason, logic, and critical thinking with alienation, procrastination, speculation, and masturbation.

This entity's lack of connection to the real world just gets more hilarious.

Just to be clear, I don't fear freedom. I fear ignorance and hardened partisanship. I fear someone who says "I GET TO DO WHAT I WANT REGARDLESS OF WHAT YOU THINK!" Which to me sounds like if you don't want to stop at a red light because you are in a hurry, it's your prerogative to blow right thru that intersection.

I fear someone who says "Yelling anything anywhere is protected by free speech." Which to me sounds like you can walk into any public space and yell anything you want, regardless of what might happen.

Freedom comes with consequences and responsibilities. You may have a different view than mine, and to be honest I may have misread some of yours (this is the Internet, and sometimes our true intents and views get scrambled as we try to type.) But from reading your posts, I'm given the strong impression that freedom, to you, lacks any responsibilities or need to deal with the consequences of your actions. Feel free to rebut.
Wow, you fear me? Isn’t that supposed to be better than being respected? That’s what I’m told.

It’s your freedom and choice to live in fear. I choose hope, love, acceptance, knowledge, truth, and beauty.

See what I did there? I pointed out how we differ, but yet how we can coexist. We can make voluntary choices and live in peace despite disagreement.

The public arena is where more speech should be encouraged! More!

Don’t like the guy who’s screaming at you saying you’re going to hell? Don’t call pigs on him and throw him in a cage, scream louder and say you aren’t!

Don’t like the person warning the sky is falling? Show evidence as to why it’s not! Don’t have the person shot or arrested!

Your solution is to shut people up, shut people down, and lock them up. The KKK should be welcome in every public place, including public universities. Anything less is censorship. Don’t like it? LEAVE! CHANGE THE CHANNEL!

I’m not surprised the word “sucks” is literally in your screen name. How appropriate!

Your thinking is off. By you saying “I support free speech, but...” is just like you saying “I’m not racist, but...” and “I support equal rights, but...”

You can’t have it both ways. There is right and there is wrong. There is knowledge and there is ignorance. There is hope and there is fear.

Steve, you are correct. LL 101 is almost always posting a link to something having to do with the men and women who serve as police officers. And it’s almost always negative. Whenever I quickly peruse his/her posts the words police or cops are almost always in the text. And because I know it’s a “me against the world” bit - it’s just something to which I have no motivation to respond. I agree there are racist Americans who are police officers - but racists, bigots, etc. are in every walk of life. Most police officers do not harbor these extreme feelings.

I will add however that anyone who has a daily job that features the risk of violent death at the hands of another, and/or the responsibility of life or death decisions, or the sights of a lot of death - should be in regular psychological therapy. Paid for by the employer. Because that is trauma. And it WILL change a person in various harmful ways including clinical depression, PTSD, etc. When one is saturated with trauma and gets no healthy relief or guided “time outs” in which to process traumatic events one can become hardened, jaded, angry, suicidal, etc.

All emergency services members including doctors and nurses should be provided regular mandatory psychological therapy.
I agree about psychological therapy, but it should happen prior to when someone becomes a cop. Wanting power over someone else, wanting the ability to force someone to do something they don’t want to do, and a driving urge to violate the constitution are behaviors of madness, not nobility.

Oh, NO!!!

https://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/ ... /39262017/

“Painters don’t have to be licensed any more!! What’s this world coming to?! We’re going to have masses of unlicensed painters roaming the streets painting everything in sight! It will be paintarchy!!!”

“Oh, and what about street corners without a cop standing there? People will kill each other with that much freedom!!!”

This fear-based non-argument brought to you by the poster who fears freedom.

Again, wow. I’m not sure who you are debating here, but I don’t see the correlation between my copied post and your house painter story “rebuttal”. To continue - please answer the following:

Does your freedom, as you see and define it, come with any responsibilities or consequences of your actions? Defend your answer.

Do you believe in the rule of law? Again defend your answer.

I’ll be happy to respond accordingly. If you would prefer to continue your current approach, I’ll probably pass. Thanks and have a great day.
Thomas Jefferson said: "If a law is unjust, a man is not only right to disobey it, he is obligated to do so."

Does “the rule of law” mean slavery was right when it was legal? Was not allowing women to vote “the rule of law” before women’s suffrage?

I believe in voluntary exchanges. No force. No compulsion. Live and let live.

Btw, sodomy was illegal in the USA until 2003. “Rule of law “ fer ya!
