South Carolina Lottery payout

Post by In The Bleachers » Thu Dec 28, 2017 10:04 am

I've been doing a bit of reading about this since it happened.
And from what I'm reading, I can't see where the Lottery gets to say "Sorry, we screwed up. We aren't paying".
They printed the tickets. They came out of the machine. They were paid for.
I hope everyone down that way holds on to their ticket. Because I think after it's all hashed out, the Lottery is obligated to hand over the money.

Nothing will change until ALL incumbents are voted out of office.

At best there will be refunds for the $1 tickets.

I think what bugs me most about this story is just how much of a scam state lotteries are to begin with. Not only do states practically have monopolies on gambling since they ban most other forms of it, but they prey on people who don't grasp basic probability theory or return on your money. While casinos typically pay out better than 90 cents to the dollar, state lotteries pay a mere 50 cents. They have no problem robbing gambling addicts and putting them in the poor house, but as soon as *gasp * god forbid they should have to pay out some extra money (and it's not like we're talking multi-million dollar tickets here - we're talking $500 per ticket), they say they're not going to pay up.

They absolutely should pay the winning tickets. Does anybody believe for one second that if the glitch favored the state (ie, the machine wasn't printing as many winning tickets as it should be) that they would even fess up to it, much less pay lottery players extra money because of their mistake? Of course not!

I stopped playing the machine printed games. Ever since Mega Millions went up to $2 per play and added more numbers I stopped playing. It just doesn't offer me any value. Now it's pretty much like Powerball.

IMO, anyone who wins these big-money jackpots is just asking for trouble. Only a handful of states (of which Michigan is not one) allow winners to remain anonymous. Just imagine who and what comes out of the woodwork when everyone knows you just came into a ton of cash! Also, most of these big-jackpot winners have no idea how to manage such a massive windfall, and within a few short years many fall into a worse situation than before they won.

Some people think money will solve all their problems, but money is only a tool. Winning millions of dollars with no knowledge of how to properly manage it is like getting a nuclear-powered chainsaw minus the instruction manual.

I Win WAY more often on a scratch off than the jack shit at a casino. The draw games suck. So while on the average the casino pays out more your odds are far worse on a slot machine than a scratch off at least in Michigan. Ohio has much stingier tickets, they barely payout close to how Michigan’s are.
