106.5 going back to ESPN Radio

Post by EnbyCee » Wed Dec 09, 2015 2:25 am

Saw on social media that 106.5 is flipping back to ESPN from CBS Sports Radio come this Monday. Before you ask, there's nothing about a flip on the Zone or WLQR's social media.

Meh. ESPN is a little better than CBS overall (though I'm a Jim Rome fan, already listen to streams in other cities because I can't get 106.5 in my house and their streams/apps suck) but it really doesn't matter as long as the "local" show from 100 miles away is a joke and that station can't air the Tigers.

Why the hell would they do that? They'd be competing with themselves. The sports radio audience in Toledo is already small enough split 2 ways, don't need a third.

Wonder if they'll just go with the ESPN national feed in afternoons

Doubt it. Toledo's favorite C. Montgomery Burns lookalike likes to maintain the illusion of having a local show, even though Frantz moved away from this market years ago and only talks Cleveland, Cleveland, Buckeyes, Cleveland.

The audio on that show is AWFUL, BTW. Much too bassy.

"PAILS in comparison.." not sure if that was Andy's initial mistake or the Blade's, but come on.

Or as filler even on a non-CBS station like WDUZ in Green Bay, which has Rome on in between local shows in morning and afternoon. But their morning and afternoon shows are complete crud, yes.

Yeah, Cumulus is broke, AM is dying, and Toledo is a depressed market. They're just waiting for the transmitter to fully break, or to no longer be able to pay the electric bill. Once that happens so long WLQR-AM.

That could happen, what future there is for AM lies in niche formats. Although you rarely hear any language besides English being used anywhere in Toledo, we really don't get new immigrants like the less collapsed parts of the Midwest from about Ft. Wayne westward. But there is the brokered weekend Spanish stuff on 1230 that already airs so I suppose there might be an audience for it full-time.
