Girl, 3, shoots self in leg with father's gun in Kingsessing section

A young girl is hospitalized in stable condition after suffering a gunshot wound in the Kingsessing section of Philadelphia.

It happened at 12:30 p.m. Sunday at a home in the 1300 block of South Wilton Street.

Police arrived to find a 3-year-old girl who had been shot in the right thigh.

According to authorities, the toddler got a hold of her father's loaded gun and somehow shot herself in the leg. Police said because of the way the girl was sitting when the weapon discharged, the bullet made multiple wounds in the leg, entering through her thigh and exiting out of her calf.

Medics rushed her to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia in stable condition. Police said the 3-year-old girl remains at CHOP where she will undergo surgery in an attempt to save her leg.

Invesitgators said the father was rushing to work and asked his mother to watch his daughter and to secure the gun. The father does have a permit to carry.

Police said when medics first arrived on the scene, the grandmother and other people in the home did not tell them that this was a gun shot wound nor that there was a gun in the house.

According to authorities charges are expected to be brought against the grandmother, who police said hid the weapon after the shooting.
