Prolific Okanagan offender set to plead guilty to several charges

A prolific offender in the Okanagan plans to plead guilty in the new year to a number of charges, while he awaits trial on several others.

Dayton McAlpine evaded police for several weeks last spring, coming to a head at the West Kelowna Wal-Mart on June 1.

An employee of the store recognized McAlpine, who was wanted on a province-wide warrant at the time, and called police. When the officers arrived, they attempted to arrest McAlpine, but he allegedly rammed two police vehicles while attempting to escape, hitting a parked SUV with two children inside in the process.

An officer fired his gun at the drivers' side window of the truck McAlpine was allegedly driving, but no one was injured and McAlpine successfully avoided arrest that day.

The RCMP caught up with him 10 days later, arresting him outside a home on West Kelowna's Douglas Road. He was charged with flight from police, dangerous operation of a vehicle and driving while disqualified for the Wal-Mart incident.

He's remained in custody since his arrest, after he was denied bail in August, and he currently faces a slew of charges from several different incidents dating back to February of this year.

On Friday, McAlpine was set to face trial for charges of assault, theft over $5,000 and uttering threats from incidents in February, March and May in Peachland, but the trial was adjourned. The case has been put over to Jan. 15, when he intends to plead guilty.

On that same date, he's also scheduled to plead guilty to a theft charge from March, a flight from police charge from May and a dangerous operation of a vehicle charge from June 9, but it's unclear if he intends to plead guilty to all charges.

As for the charges from the Wal-Mart incident, McAlpine faces a judge-alone trial in Kelowna's Supreme Court on Jan. 27, but 2020 is gearing up to be busy year for the 32 year old, with two other trials set for Feb 14 and April 6.

The February trial stems from another alleged flight from police incident in West Kelowna on May 22, while the April trial relates to drug possession and breach of probation charges from his arrest on June 11.

McAlpine has a long criminal record, dating back to 2005.
