There is a lot of comments and work reported on here about tropo openings. I recently had someone ask me to explain it, and I poked around and found this really good explanation:

A great explanation of "Tropo"
Re: A great explanation of "Tropo"
Have been working some good distances on tropo openings, since I got on VHF back in 1962, on the 6 M band and in 1978 on the 2 M band.
Started listening to FMBC DX with a 3 tube Granco tuner and a twinlead dipole taped to my wall, in 1960

Re: A great explanation of "Tropo"
I had a station called The River stop my scan in Flint on 96.7 the other day... it was in Minnesota, coming in like I was looking at the tower! I noticed it making a short grocery run, and it was still booming in when I drove home.
I confirm all my information through a high, white whore's souse!
