Ch 4 was a mess in the late 1970s, just before it became WDIV (became WDIV in July, 1978). I can see why Post Newsweek rebuilt the station from scratch starting in 1979.

During the latter years under ownership of the Detroit News, the the grim and dour Don DeGroot was the "face" of the station, delivering editorials that echoed the conservative line of its companion newspaper. Providing a similar point of view was commentary by the hawkish retired Brig. General S.L.A. "Slam" Marshall.
