2018 Miscellaneous Tropos

Post by mtburb » Wed May 16, 2018 9:53 pm

For tropo events that just don't feel worthy of their own threads...

Starting this off, tonight, I have so far received these stations in this ongoing tropo:
-WKYC
-WEWS
-WUPW
-WQHS

WNWO is also coming in despite my antenna not being placed in the location that I usually place it to receive it.

For three days in January 2017 (15th, 16th, 19th) and one night in September 2017 (22nd), I managed to receive KDKA Pittsburgh from 202 miles away indoors!

Not sure if this is the same tropo event but on both this past Sunday (13th) and Wednesday (16th) I was able to listen to WBCT in Algonac. The signal both days was strongest while on the ferry. On Sunday even had the RDS show.

WBCT is typical along that path. Before a new local came on in the air in Southwest Ontario, WBCT made an appearance in every one of my London bandscans (WKAR as well). Of course, in the age of IBOC and new stations, it's harder and harder to hear, as are most stations. But without all that, it *should* be audible in the area, obviously not strong enough to trigger RDS though. There was tropo on the 16th. It's interesting to see what people away from the lake - mainly in SE MI - were hearing. In West Michigan, we had massive lake duct that was bringing in Green Bay in the morning (synoptic tropo) then when that 2200 foot duct broke with the daytime heating, it left a 1300 foot duct over Lake Michigan that brought Chicago in solid as locals the remainder of the day into the evening, taking out Grand Rapids at 35 miles and Muskegon at 20 miles like they weren't even there. I've had strong lake tropo (it has sorta been my main focus for 16 years), but ducts like this into Chicago are rare up here on the ridge 22 miles from the lake. But 48125er posted a YouTube video of the typical lake tropo as it's heard in Grand Rapids with the usual big ones reaching in and the smaller ones either weak or not there, but up here... geez. The list of stations wiped off the air is too long, half by the stations themselves and the other half by Chicago IBOC. I made an entirely separate post with all 86 audio files for those interested in what was heard here.

Chicago was all over the FM dial here in TC early this morning. I had to get up early to experience the opening at its strongest!

Same here in Fremont. Same opening as last Wednesday. Started with strong Green Bay, then Chicago blasting from 1am to 6am when the inversion abruptly cut down from 3,500 to 1,600 feet around 6am. I went to bed a while after, but up again now this afternoon, the entire dial is Chicago and Milwaukee, in the midst of a lake opening with all the translators in again.

I'm begging for this tropo to stop so I can regroup. I have hours of recordings from the tropo opening Tuesday into Wednesday (centered on Chicagoland and Kankakee due to the fog over the water), and then Wednesday's lake tropo opening. There are so many new AM translators that I don't even know where to look and keep getting them in strong as locals but unaware of what they are til I hear an ID as they're new and often running syndicated programming between local stuff. I did have 92.1 The Shore in solid in stereo within sight of the WGHN tower. And of course, XRT was all over WMPA (couldn't even hear the local inland). I'll have more of a report later when I organize and finish this stuff. I'm not sure of my future living arrangement, hence the reason for recording a typical tropo opening to the west and a typical lake inversion, not to mention it's good to do with all these new pests coming. It's similar to looking back on how 98.9 VCY was the usual for lake tropo. Now there's an LP in Whitehall and Two Rivers takes whats left of the frequency. It's good to hear other reports along the beaches as to what's coming in, but so few people are posting it. (For those with a portable radio that uses the dBµ / dB scale, WMYX was in at 55dBµ (that's the same as it is in Milwaukee), 101.1 WKQX and the rest of the Chicago Loop stations in at 45 (same as heard on the North Side) during the lake opening.

The tropo opening of Tuesday will be posted later -- here is Wednesday's lake tropo instead. Audio will be posted later as well for those who prefer the whole listening thing over reading.

Lake Tropo Log - Fremont, Michigan
Chris Kadlec / beaglebass.com/dx

This bandscan includes stations received via lake tropo in Fremont, Michigan, 25 miles inland, 101 miles ene of Milwaukee. The inversion, which immediately followed a strong tropo opening to Chicagoland and the surrounding area the night and morning before, extended 1,300 feet above the lake surface with the lake breeze front at approximately 40 miles inland. Water temperatures remained in the mid-40s with air temperatures overhead in the upper 70s. A lake breeze kept the temperatures immediately along the shore in the upper 50s and low 60s throughout the day. After tuning and recording signals between 4 and 8pm, there was a trip to the beach to see the inversion's effect on the sunset, setting at 9:11 p.m. on this day, followed by some additional station monitoring, primarily additional signals such as translators and signal level monitoring. However, there was neither enough time nor enough daylight to monitor the entire band at the beach, the paper was so wet from the cold moisture, and the non-commercial band was rather rushed at home due to the time crunch, noting the sun does not wait to set. Overall, this was a classic - albeit unexpected - summertime lake opening. This opening also marked the second day in a row of Chicagoland being received at local strength and the third time in a week.

Frequencies not included in the list below were occupied either by locals or the digital signals (IBOC) of listed adjacents. Seek was only selectively monitored and has been estimated.

I'll just list the new logs I made from TC:

88.1 WMWK Milwaukee, Wisconsin
89.7 WONU Kanakee, Illinois
90.1 WMBI Chicago, Illinois
90.5 WRTW Crown Point, Indiana
91.9 WJCH Joliet, Illinois
92.3 WPWX Hammond, Indiana
93.1 WXRT Chicago, Illinois
93.9 WLIT Chicago, Illinois
94.1 WGFA Watseka, Illinois
94.7 WLS Chicago, Illinois

I was at the 95's and then I ate breakfast. By the time I came back to do more scanning, the tropo was weaker. I did pick up WCHY 97.7 in my house for the first time though.

I yesterday bought a WeatherX weather/AM/FM combo radio from Meijer and today attempted some FM DX with it from various spots in Wyandotte. It was a bit disappointing so far...

-CHKS Sarnia
-CHYR Leamington (normally receivable in-market FM station)
-WKKO Toledo

For three days in January 2017 (15th, 16th, 19th) and one night in September 2017 (22nd), I managed to receive KDKA Pittsburgh from 202 miles away indoors!

Well, got one DX each of TV, AM and FM today.

A station branding as "Canada's Cool FM" probably around the 96 FM dial (though it may have been a normally-unreceivable local-market station) gets added to my FM DX list for today, the list was still a bit disappointing.

However, snagged Cleveland on AM and TV...confirmed reception of WKNR at around 5 PM today (unusually early for AM DX) and right now am receiving WEWS, which at this point has long been officially designated a regular TV DX station for me.

Canada's Cool FM is pretty common here in West Michigan with any southeastern tropo (common in fall especially). They should be very common for you as well in Metro Detroit being just up the road. :)

Some strong FM DX rolling into Wyandotte today.

Went to a few locations in Wyandotte this morning and managed to pick up:

-KHB97 Sandusky, OH
-WWWW 102.9 Ann Arbor
-What was probably WKFR 103.3 Battle Creek (heard a commercial for "Amigo(?)" Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram followed by a one for some sort of event "in Lansing")
-CCI on 107.7 between two stations, one of which was in Spanish

As for TV DX, WTOL has sometimes managed to make a picture appear once yesterday and a few times this morning.

For three days in January 2017 (15th, 16th, 19th) and one night in September 2017 (22nd), I managed to receive KDKA Pittsburgh from 202 miles away indoors!

There are no Spanish stations on 107.7 in the Midwest. You were obviously hearing Es. The MUFs have been pretty high this morning and well into FM in some places, currently between Michigan and the Texas area.
