What a joke. They'd actually built a halfway decent news operation over the past couple of years, although they'd driven the station's brand so far into the ground for decades that the ratings haven't reflected it, and NOW they're outsourcing things to South Bend? Merry Christmas to everyone who works there. Another part of Toledo media falls victim to bean counters.

The worst part is it being outsourced to South Bend. If it were a station in Detroit or Cleveland, or even Columbus, Dayton, or Cincy, that's one thing, those are places with economic and cultural ties to Toledo. South Bend is a smaller market, 2 1/2 hours away, the area between Toledo and South Bend is mostly very thinly populated by east-of-the-Mississippi standards. And as soon as you cross into Indiana, it's where people begin looking towards Chicago and rooting for the Cubs, Bears and Blackhawks instead of looking towards Detroit or Cleveland and rooting for those teams. I think I'm gonna watch 24 once this changeover happens just to hear the South Bend crew butchering reports on Toledo news.

Norm Van Ness is first to go, happened to catch the news after the football game last night and he said it was his last broadcast on 24. Hope he lands somewhere, he does a solid job with the weather without hamming it up like other Toledo weathermen.

There is (or was) a bar/club on Byrne not far from there. But do they really think someone would come crashing into their studio like what happened at WLS in Chicago almost 10 years ago?

Sad about Kayla and Elyse, but moving on is probably best for both.

Oh come on, "Better Living" definitely needed 30 extra minutes.

At least until they sell that time slot for infomercials, like they did with the 5-6 am news. Only live local stuff left in the mornings is from 6:30-7 am and the Today show cut-ins, which are almost literally all just weather.

There are some good people at that station that appear to have avoided the axe. Laura Emerson, Kimberly Newman, Kristi Leigh.

Part of South Bend's DMA extends into Michigan so their sports departments do cover the Detroit teams a little. I at least remember seeing Tigers highlights along with Cubs and White Sox when I watched WSBT during the summer once. So hey, there's that!

Here's the article with Norm:

Sounds like it's just a months-long funeral march for almost everyone besides Kimberly and Allison (and Allison is pregnant, are they just going to have Kimberly do everything herself when she's on leave?). Has to be a bright and cheerful atmosphere over on Byrne Rd.

Uh, no. For one thing, WDIV was ALWAYS blacked out of NBC programming on cable, and of course never carried on DirecTV in Toledo.
