Heat Wave DX - 9/21/17 to 9/25/17

The technical side of broadcasting. Think IBOC is a sham? Talk about it here! How about HDTV? Post DX reports here as well.

Heat Wave DX - 9/21/17 to 9/25/17

Post by MWmetalhead » Fri Sep 22, 2017 7:31 pm

Just now, I picked up WQIO-FM from Mount Vernon, OH (93.7 MHz) loudly & clearly in my driveway. This is a Class B FM station located about 40 miles NNE of Columbus, OH.

Also got a readable signal from WDOK-FM in Cleveland (102.1 MHz). Of all the Cleveland area stations, that one and WCPN-FM seem to come in around here the most often.

Used to pick up two or three more on occasion before the new allotments in & around Windsor, ON and all the IBOC hash on first-adjacent frequencies began trashing the FM band around Metro Detroit.

Listening location: 16 miles NNW of downtown Detroit.

Over in Ypsilanti this evening, I had 88.3 and 107.1 from Port Huron over the much closer Ann Arbor stations! Also had 92.9 Chatham and CHKS and WBUK fighting it out on 106.3 with no sign of usual K-Love! Is the 106.3 K-Love off the air?

In regards to WDOK, it definitely helps that WDET does not run IBOC.

Now, THAT is remarkable!!! The field strength of WQKL in the Ypsi area is easily city grade. For WSAQ out of Pt. Huron to overcome that is downright miraculous.

I used to pick up CHKS in Ann Arbor quite often in '99 and '00, long before K-Love took to the airwaves from Oak Park. 106.3 used to a very quiet spot on the dial in Ann Arbor back in those days, so it didn't take much in the way of favorable DX to haul in CHKS.

FM 96 from London is another station that used to make regular appearances in Ann Arbor during DX weather - perhaps they still do!

The K-Love station @ 106.3 MHz has been broadcasting all week long at normal strength.

Meanwhile, last night over here in Wyandotte, I had KDKA-TV from Pittsburgh show up for only the fourth time this year!

WTOL, WKYC and WEWS were, as usual, also picked up.
For three days in January 2017 (15th, 16th, 19th) and one night in September 2017 (22nd), I managed to receive KDKA Pittsburgh from 202 miles away indoors!

I need to correct an earlier remark I made - K-Love at 106.3 Oak Park, 107.1 Roseville, 98.3 SW Detroit and 93.5 Detroit are ALL off the air right now.

At least some of these were off the air last night, too.

Late Friday night here in Jackson, I managed to pick up WKYC and WQHS out of Cleveland, WPVX out of Akron, WTOL and WTVG Toledo, WBGU Bowling Green, and a faint signal from WNDU South Bend around 10:30ish Saturday morning. Along with WDIV, WXYZ, WMYD, WKBD, and WTVS Detroit, WNEM Saginaw, and WCMZ Flint (though WXYZ and WCMZ are regular DX pickups). All with an amplified indoor antenna.

I had the 98.3 SW Detroit translator apparently picking up WKRK-HD2 yesterday morning/afternoon. Also had WKRK and WZAK over WMXD and WDRQ respectively. Also, WWSR was in for a while on Friday night with the Indians game over WDRQ.

Between Friday and Saturday, I think I may have received every Port Huron/Sarnia full-power signal in Ypsilanti! 102.3 WGRT has been in on at least three different days instead of the usual mix of WPOS and CINA. Finally nabbed 96.9 WBTI yesterday (kind of odd that I got WNFA and WSAQ before that one)!

My most remarkable had to be nabbing 102.5 WDVE from Pittsburgh yesterday morning with ads for Rivers Casino (which is in Pittsburgh) and Field and Stream (which has a store in Cranberry Township, which might be the Novi of the Pittsburgh area)

Well, you can also add WEWS, WKYC, WQHS and WUPW to my tropo catches tonight.
For three days in January 2017 (15th, 16th, 19th) and one night in September 2017 (22nd), I managed to receive KDKA Pittsburgh from 202 miles away indoors!
