June 2017 Tropos

Post by mtburb » Thu Jun 01, 2017 11:41 pm

Another new tropo thread since it's the first of the month...as before you are free to post any DXing reports here if you don't feel like starting a separate thread, any type of DX-AM, TV, FM, shortwave, weather radio-is, as always, accepted, but expect some good activity in this thread since this is usually the time of year DX activity really balloons.

Tonight just had the usual lake TV tropo stations WEWS and WKYC (and visible pictures from CKCO) showing up and nothing else, but again, looking at Bill Hepburn's maps a few days back, there will be at least considerable tropo activity tomorrow, we'll wait and see...
For three days in January 2017 (15th, 16th, 19th) and one night in September 2017 (22nd), I managed to receive KDKA Pittsburgh from 202 miles away indoors!

Today turned out to be somewhat disappointing...only WEWS plus near-catches from either WSMH or WEYI, but there was still one highlight-CKCO was coming in nearly snow-free (yet the static sounds were still prevalent though I could faintly hear the station's actual audio at some points).

I got WNWO on Sunday, and WCMZ has been coming in perfectly since May 30
One time, I got WYZZ Peoria 330 miles away indoors clearly for 10 minutes on Dec 5, 2015

Was up at Macinaw City for a few days couple of weeks ago, seemed like the FMBC band was pretty flat. Best distance heard was just over 50 Miles.
Was using my Teksun PL880 radio with the built in whip antenna, at ground level right near the straits. .
Heard a lot of CW activity on 20 and 40M ham bands.

The PL-880 has switchable USB and LSB, right? How do you adjust the pitch on CW with that? I think I will eventually get that also.

Just got the PL-390, as it is SO handy in so many ways. Although Rich is skeptical, I still think it can be used as a rough FI meter, if "fudge factors" by frequency are included, and compared to actual FI readings in the same location. Not M-3 predictions, but those are a good starting point. No radio (or actual FI meter) amplifies all frequencies overall equally, and meters and displays have a nonlinear range near the top and bottom of the range, so it has to be away from the edges of the range. That's why FI meters have to be calibrated by frequency, and signals put in a range by attenuators so they are not too near the top and bottom of the range, but roughly 10-90% of the d'Arsonval deflection or other display. When CKLW was at low power recently, the digital meter read low by 10-12 dB. Never did hear it change pattern though. Now it's back where it should be. All the signals below 20 dB on AM BC on the PL-390 are noisy and (nearly) unreadable. That corresponds to less than 0.1 mV/m in my estimation, which on first estimation you add 20 to get to a true dBu FIELD level. So if it reads 20 dB, it's around 40 dBu.

Here on the eastern side of the state, this is one of the deadest late spring tropo seasons I can remember. Usually by now Canadian stations are a mainstay on the dial, but thus far they have been virtually non-existent.

Last night, I got something unidentifiable on analog UHF 40 and something else on analog VHF 5. I received these both on an older TV. I've seen the one on 40 before on my modern TV, but it was so weak the TV didn't even show static, but the one on 5 could have been anything! Possibly Cuba!

While I was on vacation for the past few days, I had WOMC displaying a good signal on I-75 as far north as around the I-69 interchange in Flint, had 103.3(?) Tawas City coming in as far south as the Saginaw Road exit on I-75 near Bay City and held one of the Flint FMs on I-75 northbound up to around Bay City.

But now that I'm back home, I was surprised to see the typical lake tropo station of WEWS showing up and in fact it still is right now.
For three days in January 2017 (15th, 16th, 19th) and one night in September 2017 (22nd), I managed to receive KDKA Pittsburgh from 202 miles away indoors!

Wrapping up this thread, nothing notable but WCMZ has noticeably often showed up today and for much of the past few days here.
