Winter Sporadic E? Pirate? Spanish on 94.1 SE Michigan

Post by Fingerboard Corners » Wed Nov 28, 2018 5:53 pm

Driving in SE MI this morning, I heard Spanish Language programming on 94.1. It quickly faded and I was hearing WHBC-FM 94.1 Canton, OH. Subsidiary Winter Sporadic E? Pirate? LP or Translator?

I have no idea what you heard on 94.1, but there IS a secondary sporadic-E season, and we are coming into it. Sporadic-E is most likely and most prominent on the solstices (near June 22 and December 22).

The winter Es season is generally shorter and not as strong as the summer season......

I heard Avenged Sevenfold for a brief period on 107.9 FM yesterday afternoon.

Someone was either using a wireless FM transmitter in their car, or else I was hearing either KBPI Ft. Collins, KBPL Colorado Springs or Rock 108 Waterloo, IA (the calls escape me).

The winter Es season is generally shorter and not as strong as the summer season, but it sometimes brings surprises.

The winter season is more likely to bring Es at night than the summer season, and more likely to cause Es at higher latitudes (e.g. Canada).

Like summer Es, a good opening may provide another opening 28 days later. This is even more pronounced in the winter season.

In Summer Es, areas of E-Layer ionization (commonly nicknamed "clouds") travel north westward. In the winter, these ionization regions usually move southbound.

For 94.1 FM, my best guess is KLNO in Fort Worth, TX.

I'm now thinking I briefly heard Rock 108 KEYJ, Abilene, TX. "Hail to the King" by Avenged Sevenfold is definitely a song that station would play.

Abilene is about 150 miles due west of Fort Worth.
