Reel-to-Reel Rewind

Bloomberg:
"Surging demand for vinyl LPs has raised hopes for the reel-to-reel tape deck, which returns to sale this month for the first time in decades."

What is frustrating about this whole analog vs digital debate is that it is not the medium that makes analog sound better; rather, it is the loudness war that carries on to this day and the fact that analog mediums can't be pushed as hard as digital. If engineers would just back off of the processing and allow the return of dynamic range, then digital would, under most listening conditions and under most circumstances, sound better than analog.

Hmmm.... Interesting. I know there are quite a few CURRENT artists who are releasing new albums on LP.

Nice to see reel to reel return, but hell, that deck is worth more than my car!

I'm glad I hung on my nice reel-to-reel.

By next year it should be worth $$$...

I agree about the loudness war being a problem. But how is that better with analog mediums? Maybe if artists release music on vinyl or r2r they know they are targeting hifi crowds that prefer less processing and will release better (i.e. less processed) mixes on analog. That is about the only reason I'd pay more for vinyl or r2r over a CD.

$11,000??? Ebay is knee deep in fantastic old machines; most just need a belt and to have the "sticky - shed" goo cleaned out of the capstans.

With regard to old pre-recorded tapes, any existing recordings would have to be assumed to be printed trough and ready to shed it's magnetic layer on first play. (Really, how much of this stuff was just an LP master without the RIAA curve?)
New, blank media is around $30 for a 7" reel, or $55 for a pancake of Quantegy. ( I can get a 2TB HDD for $60. )

I have two machines, a TEAC A-1200u and a Pioneer RT-909. The TEAC sees duty as a preamp in my garage but neither are ever used as playback machines.

I have an Ampex 440B and a Tascam 22-4 in the attic of a garage in Colorado. At one point I was thinking about making the Ampex a coffee table.
