A correction: I'd like to point out that the CCI with the Spanish was actually on 107.9. In fact, I've been able to deduce that there are actually three stations in this CCI, two of which I've identified as WVMX 107.9 Columbus, OH and WENZ 107.9 Cleveland, OH. Still can't figure out what the Spanish station is though.

For three days in January 2017 (15th, 16th, 19th) and one night in September 2017 (22nd), I managed to receive KDKA Pittsburgh from 202 miles away indoors!

Spanish on 107.9 is a regular here in West Michigan, which is WLEY. You can also easily find those in the station databases. I suggest using the WTFDA database, which is surely the best option. It would be a 30-second search for you to find that info on your own in that case, just using the frequency and search a few different states quickly.

http://db.wtfda.org/

We keep it nice and up to date, unlike some other sites out there.

Turns out, the Spanish station on 107.9 was actually a normally-unreceivable in-market station, W300DI in Dearborn (a low-powered FM satellite of WDTW 1310). I was not expecting that at all.

You know, I remember that because it had the crazy alien-sounding transmitter link issue last summer, which I recorded while passing through. And I recall it was a Spanish religious translator or whatever. And that's my mistake, because it's clearly in the database I directed you to, listed as "REGIONAL MEXICAN LA ZETA 1310". :rolleyes Chicago seemed pretty unlikely...

Visiting family in the Lansing area this past weekend, I picked these up on my Eton (no external antenna):

88.3 WEJC White Star - common but usually doesn't trigger RDS
89.1 WLKB Bay City - common but usually doesn't trigger RDS
89.3 WGNB Zeeland - first time catch for this area (I make it out here once every few months)
90.7 WAUS Berrien Springs - having WKAR's IBOC off leaves 90.3 and 90.7 open to DXing again
93.3 WKQZ Midland - very common even in winter but usually doesn't trigger RDS
97.3 WMJO Essexville
97.7 WMRX Beaverton - very clear signal next to local WJIM
99.3 WATZ Alpena with Sunday morning polka show (my late grandfather's favorite)
101.5 WRVF Toledo - very clear signal next to local WHZZ (surprisingly no WIOT on 104.7, although I've had it before overpowering W284AH when it was still a Home.fm signal)
102.1 WIMT Lima clashing with regular/semi-local WMUK
102.3 WYBR Big Rapids - common but usually doesn't trigger RDS
103.7 WCKY Pemberville - common even in winter (even with the Hubbardston 103.7 in the way) but usually doesn't trigger RDS
103.9 WBZX Big Rapids clashing with regular/semi-local WRSR
106.3 WGLM Lakeview - common but usually doesn't trigger RDS
107.7 WHSB Alpena

In addition, most of the Detroit FMs were virtually local strength, even the less common ones like WDMK. WMGC was a no-go thanks to the WKAR translator though.

I also noticed that 96.7 WUFN now has RDS, with PTY Soft Rock and song/artist info formatted the same way WUGN used to (WUGN's has been stuck on a static loop of "Family Life Radio" for a while now).

For those interested, I posted my most recent bandscan project from over the weekend in Manistee here. There wasn't much of note from there, just the typical Wausau, Rhinelander, etc. The most distant stations were KGSL (265 mi.) and KWWK (311 mi.).

You sure that wasn't Wednesday? The big tropo opening to Chicagoland, Kankakee, and Lasalle was Wednesday morning and then into the big lake opening to Chicago that afternoon to sunset. Thursday was dead.

W268CN 101.5 (a translator of WDTK 1400 AM, which at the time was broadcasting some real estate show) was interfering with WRVF 101.5 Toledo in central Wyandotte, particularly around the Ford Avenue and Electric area.

Wednesday's opening netted a handful of stations here. I decided I wanted to sleep instead for a good chunk of the opening, but got into it in the mid-afternoon. Probably missed a good 20+ stations, but meh, I enjoy sleeping. Detroit and rare Indianapolis tropo with some others up to 200 miles were frustrating me by fading up and down throughout the day. The propagation mode (correction: "tropo" cannot be plural for the original poster of all these threads) doesn't match the thread, but whatever :razz

From early on Monday here in Fremont:

June 11, 2018 Low-Powered Tropo

90.7 W214AY MI Walker / 13w (35 mi.)
92.3 WRVU-LP MI Gd. Rapids / 100w (46 mi.) NEW
92.7 W224BZ MI Ionia / 250w (54 mi.) NEW
92.9 W225BL MI Gd. Rapids / 250w (38 mi.)
93.3 W227CG MI Gd. Rapids / 250w (38 mi.)
94.9 W235BN MI Gd. Rapids / 250w (38 mi.) NEW
96.5 W243BD MI Zeeland / 250w (45 mi.) NEW
99.9 W260CQ MI Plainfield Twp. / 10w (37 mi.)
99.9 W260BX MI Lansing / 190w (87 mi.)
100.9 WFFR-LP MI Roosevelt Pk. / 100w (24 mi.)
104.9 W285FO MI Gd. Rapids / 250w (38 mi.)

Many of the signals were in at semi-local or near local quality all morning. 90.7 gave a very clear ID and was in most of the day with Lake Michigan blocking out most of my usual signal on 90.7. 92.7 in moderately with its old-timey jingle IDs. 92.9, 93.3, 99.9, and 104.9 Grand Rapids are all regulars here, just enhanced and in stereo. 96.5 is a first-time catch. First time I've heard 90.7 and 99.9 FLR in some years here though.

Cleveland was coming in well the past two mornings. On both mornings WEWS was in and right now WENZ 107.9 is interfering with W300DI (one of my low-powered locals). I heard WENZ go into a commercial break with commercials for AT&T and Geico, then a promo for a game with the Cleveland Indians taking place tomorrow (though I will be in Cleveland I won't be going to that game) followed by a commercial for Circle K.

For three days in January 2017 (15th, 16th, 19th) and one night in September 2017 (22nd), I managed to receive KDKA Pittsburgh from 202 miles away indoors!

Another big event early this morning (July 1st). Here are some of my highlights (same radio used and location as in my last post):

88.5 WYSU Youngstown OH (RDS) with "Late Night Jazz"
88.7 WIAA Interlochen (partial RDS) crystal clear in CIMX null

93.5 CBCL London (RDS) very good in WHMI null
94.1 WHBC Canton (partial RDS) good in WWDK null
94.9 WQMX Medina scratchy but listenable, no sign of WMMQ
95.1 A different country station from WFBE, playing "Pickup Man" by Joe Diffie - couldn't get an ID but assuming WYLE Grove City PA (ex WWGY)
95.3 WCFX Clare
95.9 CFPL London dominant on frequency with RDS and very little sign of CJWF
99.3 CJBC-4 London
100.5 CBBL London (partial RDS)
101.3 CKOT Tillsonburg
102.3 WYBR Big Rapids with RDS fighting with WGRT
103.1 WGDN, CFHK and WQUS all fighting
103.3 WQLB Tawas
103.5 WTCM Traverse City crystal clear in WMUZ null
103.9 WLEN, WRSR, and CKDK all present plus new catch WBZX Big Rapids
104.5 WSNX Muskegon (RDS)

Also a number of the Cleveland summertime regulars were in with varying signal strengths: 87.7, 90.3, 91.1, 93.1, 96.5, 99.5, 105.7 all good, 92.3, 102.1, 107.3, 107.9 less so but still listenable.

The 95.1 may have been WLST Marinette, WI (which is also country)

A summary of tropos I've experienced from my last post here until now:

June 16: Driving to Cleveland, I had WRVF Toledo held in very good while along the Ohio Turnpike all the way east until it started disappearing around Amherst (which heading east is a bit into Lorain County and a few miles west of where I-90 splits off of the Turnpike while I-80 continues solo). Then, while driving home, held in WONE Akron all the way from somewhere west of the I-90/I-71/I-490 interchange on the west side of Cleveland west to approximately Joppa Road on the westbound Turnpike between the Lorain/Erie County line and Berlin Heights, at which point I changed station to WRVF, which continued to come in crystal clear that far east.

And for the past two nights, Cleveland TV was once again coming in, of course it was WEWS. Incidentally, both nights it was during the first minutes of their 11 PM newscast.

For three days in January 2017 (15th, 16th, 19th) and one night in September 2017 (22nd), I managed to receive KDKA Pittsburgh from 202 miles away indoors!

Tropo cannot be plural; it is uncountable with only a single troposphere in our beautiful atmosphere. It's "tropo" from "troposphere" with the countable noun of "catch" (or alternatively "reception" or whatever you wanna use), therefore "tropo catches" and/or "tropo". Not to be an ass, of course. It has merely made me insane after months and months of seeing "tropos". :razz . On the plus, at least you're not saying "skips" for tropo. :rollin . In a world of Es, those people deserve a whippin'.

Tropo - Day 2 (6/30 - 7/01)

Post by cckadlec » Mon Jul 02, 2018 6:45 am

Here's day 2 (6/30 into 7/1) of the recent tropo opening as it moved east on the south edge of the warm front. Day 1 (WV MN IA OH IL) had much longer distances simultaneously to MN and WV but weaker signals, while day 2 was only up to about 400 miles but extremely intense, stable, and long-lasting signals for many hours on end. Just a few selected recordings here. Radio is a Grundig G8 portable.

Some of these are part of my forthcoming audio compilation file including 250 TOH IDs (perhaps 275 if the troposphere treats me more favorable as I only have 235 so far from the past three weeks) as heard here in Fremont. Also coming soon are 6 bandscans along Lake Huron and Georgian Bay and a handful along the north shore of Lake Superior.

Day 2 of 2: Columbus, Detroit, Erie, Buffalo. Draw a straight line from here to Detroit, Erie, and beyond and there's the duct. Intensely strong and stable signals unlike day 1.

** 92.3 WCOL OH Columbus (285 mi.)

TOH ID / iHeart, iHeart, iHeart, iHeart. Yeah, we get it. You own all our media.

** 95.9 CFPL ON London (239 mi.)

TOH ID / busting through double IBOC; used to be common until the hiss monsters caged it.

** 96.7 CHYR ON Leamington (186 mi.)

TOH ID / usually in with most Detroit openings, but ran into my TOH ID project.

** 97.1 WREO OH Ashtabula (286 mi.)

TOH ID / on the very edge of what is typically possible without long-haul stuff.

** 98.9 CHCD ON Simcoe (288 mi.)

Recorded a nice Canada Day long weekend congrats and ID only to turn around and find the signal was far better in the other room but they stopped IDing, so I settled with Backstreet Boys.

** 99.5 WDCX NY Buffalo (367 mi.)

In for three straight hours. I have their TOH ID, but it's less interesting.

** 99.7 WRKZ OH Columbus (285 mi.)

This one fought me recording its TOH for a few hours but finally was slayed. But this clip is better. Over top of my 100kw local.

** 99.9 WXKC PA Erie (318 mi.)

Classy 100 ID / with John Tesh.

** 100.3 WGYY PA Meadville (320 mi.)

Froggy ID

** 101.1 WRIF MI Detroit (153 mi.)

TOH ID / after Columbus came all of Detroit in like mad with some signals matching levels of my own locals at times. Usual tropo but nothing like signal levels seen here.

** 103.3 WKQL PA Brookville (388 mi.)

Kool 103.3 ID / the station was in with a solid signal a short time later when I accidentally ran into it again.

** 103.7 WRTS PA Erie (319 mi.)

Star 104 ID / biggest tropo catch of the past five years here. Star 104 is a big signal but for more than 10 years was my tropo record... the furthest possible signal without crazy long haul tropo events and usually only in for a few moments. This one lasted five hours at local strength with three hours matching signal levels of my 30-mile locals.
