Sangean ATS 909X

Post by Turkeytop » Mon Feb 12, 2018 9:09 pm

I need another radio like a drunk needs another drink. I already have about 50.

But I'm starting to get the itch again. Been looking at the Sangean ATS 909X.

https://www.universal-radio.com/catalog ... /2909.html

Do any of you have experience with it?

When the evenings are warm here in Florida, like tonight, I like to do my listening outdoors. This one looks like it would be good for that purpose. I would just leave it in Florida all the time.

Just looking at the front controls, does not seem to have any provision for copying SSB or CW transmissions.
Most of the interesting stuff on the HF bands is on SSB and cW, after the deep cuts in the SWBC stations.

From the Sangean site, Features list-
SSB (Single Side Band): USB / LSB 40Hz / Step on Fine Tuning

Just above the letter "F" key in the center area on the photo on Universal Radio's page is an "AM Mode" button. The product page on the actual Sangean site has it labelled as "SSB."

This is getting creepy. I always buy my radios from Universal Radio. Never shop anywhere else.

Today I got an e mail from Amazon, saying "you might be interested in this." There was an ad for a Sangean ATS 909. How did they know I wanted that?

Their price was about $50 better than at Universal Radio. It was tempting, but, in the end, I deccided to support conventional retailing. I ordered from Universal.

This review is interesting...

My computer won't allow me to open that link. Says it's untrustworthy.

You used this line before... in fact, your last radio purchase, IIRC. I’m too tired to go find it. Ya gotta love a creature of habit.

It arrived to day. A lot of new features I'll need to get used to. A bit of a learning curve. But I've got the basics.

Now I'm going out to the back yard to do a band scan on the MW and FM bands, I'll post the results.

Wonder what longwave airport beacons you can hear with this radio? My Teksun PL880 gets the local ones out to about 50 miles.

Is there a listing of beacons available online?

There are a few that seem complete, I use WWW.dxcentre.com/ndb/htm. It has been right whenever I consult it. Try a google search to find other NDB longwave info. About once a week I find a new NDB signal , late at night, on he big radio and antenna :D
.

One such, from our "Long Wave Beacons" discussion in this forum back in December:
Frank's NON DIRECTIONAL BEACONS (NDB) Page
Our friend, the Google, will serve up a few dozen more.

Tried it out on the short wave bands. The usual suspects were all there, China Radio International, Radio Havana, Radio Marti, Radio Romania International. The band conditions were awful, but there were a few surprises. BBC was broadcasting from Western Africa, I hope no one at BBC is reading this. They'll shut down that broadcast if they find out we;re listening here. Also heard VOA from somewhere in Africa. Back in the day, VOA and BBC were on all over the dial 24 hours a day.

I also picked up NHK in Japanese. For the first time ever, I heard KNLS. Not from Alaska, but from Madagascar. I hadn't realized they had transmitters outside of the U.S.

This radio has one cool feature I like. You don't have to adjust the clock for DST. In fact, you don't ever have to adjust the clock for anything. It's taken care of. FM stations that broadcast RDS information also include a time signal. This signal is used to calibrate the radio's internal clock.

When I first unpacked it and turned it on, I wondered how it was already displaying the correct time. That's how it's done.

Clever.
