Oak Creek / Milwaukee Bandscan

The technical side of broadcasting. Think IBOC is a sham? Talk about it here! How about HDTV? Post DX reports here as well.

Summary

Milwaukee, Wisconsin -- Here's a typical bandscan from south suburban Milwaukee, a location that has been one of my DX spots for the past 11+ years. This is a basic bandscan only, meaning it was done in the car as opposed to the portable radio, which would be more likely to get another dozen or two common stations that the less sensitive car radio would miss, but would take an extra hour per scan. So take this scan as being what a typical listener would hear instead of a DXer.

Northern Michigan stations can be heard at this location on nearly every day, including some of the most frequent visitors, such as 90.5 Gaylord (241 mi.), 98.5 Harrison (183 mi.), 106.7 Gaylord (212 mi.), 92.9 Cadillac (178 mi.), 91.1 Cadillac (144 mi., typically squashing the 18-mile local like a bug) as well as typical Mid-Michigan catches like 90.5 Lansing (174 mi.), 102.5 Bay City (206 mi.), 94.1 Jackson (165 mi.), among others. These stations appear in virtually every bandscan from this site, dating back to 2006 and 2008, often on seek with RDS. Many locals within 15 miles also regularly disappear and are overtaken with the 92-foot hill assisting by weakening the locals. Muskegon stations are so strong at times that they take out adjacent frequencies as they do here at my house 20 miles away, as was noted in this scan when 90.3, 97.5, 101.7, and 105.3 each took out an adjacent frequency when open enough.

However, the recent infiltration of local translators has robbed the site of many regular stations - sadly, seven of them to be precise. 92.1 Grand Haven is harder to hear, with 98.7 Grand Rapids, 100.3 Grayling, and 107.3 Greenville all wiped out or far more difficult to listen to. In addition to that is the new IBOC of WDDW one mile away, occupying 5 whole frequencies. From this, 104.3 Chicago, 104.5 Muskegon (formerly a very strong semi-local from Kenosha and north beyond Milwaukee), and 105.1 Glen Arbor are all now impossible to hear.

The bandscan is a two-day average of three scans, the first on a Saturday afternoon with the next after 8pm, and another the following day in the late morning hours. Anyone who wishes to see the three individual scans, feel free to request them!

That's wild - WHTS totally walking all over WLVE in the Milwaukee area. Amazing what the big lake does to FM signals.

WHTS can be heard from Kenosha straight up to Sheboygan and Manitowoc, as well as quite far inland west of Manitowoc as well. WLVE isn't a big signal really; it does much better inland, and of course, in the cold months when WHTS isn't such a pest. Plus, take into account that the 92-foot hill behind me takes out or weakens most Milwaukee locals. For example, 106.9 is almost always WOOD despite Energy just 14 miles away. In two of three scans, Energy was entirely absent while WOOD was in on seek with RDS in its place. Before the darn translators all started appearing, listening was much more enjoyable. Now, because of La Gran D's ridiculously uncontrolled IBOC, some signals such as semi-local WSNX are missing in action.

At this point, WGCP had just completed its massive upgrade from 2.1kW on a short tower near Cadillac to 2.65kW on the WIAA/WOLW tower. Before the upgrade, they barely reached Wellston. After, they stop seek in Manistee.

Speaking of Milwaukee translators, some of them have showed up in Manistee at times (98.7 once showed up with RDS (!!) when local WLDN was off)

98.7 actually gets out very well! While at the gas station in South Haven some months back, I caught a triple TOH ID, which I recorded. Grand Rapids, Milwaukee, and Chicago. On the car radio, Milwaukee was in solid at the time, but on the portable, all three were in at once and I just barely got any ID at all trying to zero in on what I was listening to on the car radio. WLDN off the air? Not surprising :lol .

I'm at a loss for how Energy 106.9 makes enough money to stay on the air. It has horrendous ratings (and trails the market's other two CHRs by a country mile) and doesn't complement any of the other stations in the cluster for sales purposes.

Saga should just sell the damn thing, or at minimum, flip it to a format that will complement / benefit one of their other stations.

Seems to me they should flip it to a format that would pull listenership away from 95.7 Big FM (thus benefiting Hometown Rock 96.5).

I will say this - as a whole, the Milwaukee radio market is a very good one! There is a terrific range of stations & formats from which to choose.

Those low power translators sure are bad news for DXers, There is one localy I can think of that should not even be needed. It is a 250 watt rebrodcaster about 7 miles from the 50 KW parent station on a 500 ft high antenna !
WHY ??

That particular time was when WLDN was off due to its transmitter being used for WKLA after its downgrade and move to 96.3.

I just pulled up my DX log and I have gotten the following translators from Milwaukee: 93.7, 97.9, 98.7, 99.9 (Racine), 100.3, 101.3 (LPFM), and 107.3.
The best translator signal in Wisconsin has to be the 96.1 translator in Sheboygan. I've gotten that one many times in Manistee.

That sucks about those translators, I wonder what a bandscan would like on a portable in a high rise like Hancock tower in chicago on a day like that.

That's like climbing a radio tower and taking your radio along to listen along while clinging to the tower. It's a radio unproductive feat, I must say. I have a fascinating clip I recorded at the tower site overlooking Seoul where just shy of 30 radio signals originate. Every frequency was about 4+ deep with who knows which other frequencies.
