Sports 106.7

Post by Deleted User 10525 » Tue Nov 27, 2018 8:34 pm

With I-Heart actually launching a FM sports station in a major market, Milwaukee WI. Could they possibly be looking to do this in Detroit? It's been 2 1/2 years since the abortion called Detroit Sports 105.1 left the air.

105.1 had a lot of problems, I think one of there biggest mistakes was building the station around 1 personality, Drew Lane. When Drew split the station essentially died. Just Poor planning all the way around.

Hypothetically, if IH were to put sports on 106.7, they just can't air Fox Sports feed 24/7, although at first a couple day parts are ok but in the midday and drive home slot you need a local show. I wouldn't call it The Fan, 106.7 The Game or 106.7 The Score. They could just Simulcast with 1130am honestly, just IDing only as 106.7.

Detroit is a big sports town and if 105 had planned better, they wouldn't be a power house but I bet they would be pulling mid to upper 2's.

New talent. None of the old and gray sports media guys who have already been on the air for years and years. New talent.

And go ahead and flip out about it, but a sports radio station in the Detroit market that has only one black person on the air in the middle of the night is just weird. It's just weird.

What's happening in Milwaukee right now is just bizarre!

It has never been a strong market for all sports radio.

Now, within the past 30 days, it's picked up not one...but two (!!!) new FM sports stations on 50 kW FM signals. It also still has the incumbent, 105.7 The Fan (an AM/FM translator combo owned by Entercom).

iFart apparently is worried about Good Karma's 94.5/620 combo usurping ad buys from WISN.

The funny thing is - Good Karma did iFart a favor by ditching Country from 94.5. FM 106.1 will likely be a top 3 ratings performer in Milwaukee.

Take a look at the one thing that matters: Does iFart have a M25-49 station they can sell in the cluster? And what would be easier to sell with the least amount of overhead, a rock format or sports format?

Wouldn't the station die without any local sports properties? I'll beat this horse until they do it, but considering what they have in there sports arsenal, Cume-less should be the ones to launch a sports station on 93.1, replacing GNASH-FM. At least if they flipped WDRQ to sports they would have the Lions plus MSU.

Brian ,kudos to you It’s a good thing to be creative ,I think WDFN FM could garner better numbers for 106.7 than The trashy ratings they now have ,but be a real sports station will they topple 97.1?probably not ,this is not a seek and destroy situation it’s just for getting out of the ratings basement it could work if they try.I also think this market is over do for an FM News station as well .This sports thing is the last thing to do before The for sale sign is on front lawn .

I think all of us could've ran 105.1 better than the idiots they hired ran it. Another sports station will work here but it needs to be done way better than Detroit Sports 105.1 was. Need a local morning show, need to have a mixture of known and unknown talent, MAYBE have the rights to a local team. Most of all though they need patience. A new sports station won't beat or even come close to 97.1 for awhile so just build an audience and stick with it. As a H*** sports fan who hasn't listened to 97.1 in a couple years I would love for another sports station to be here.

Well, the Greater Media GM responsible for the 105.1 debacle now works in Shitstain, Connecticut.

Awareness of that trainwreck runs far and wide, evidently.

Cannot rule out 106.7 going all sports at a later date given the aggressive move that just happened in Milwaukee. It won't happen, though, until rights become available.

It's possible that there might be a WWJ-AM simulcast on an FM station someday, though I don't think it's likely. But I can't imagine an FM owner trying to do an all-news format. The labor costs alone make that a non-starter.

I believe the Lions, Tigers and Wings contracts expire in 2021. MW I don’t think they need a team because 105.1s ratings I believe were the highest before the Pistons got there. A pro team helps but I don’t think they need one.

That begs the question...what team would be worth the ratings disaster? I believe the Wings and Tigers are a package deal still. So you get to air two mediocre-at-best teams. Lions? Pfft. Pistons? Trending upward but can't count on that. Wolverine sports? Spartan sports? Not like any of those teams are contenders for anything other than the middle of the pack. You would need some serious good hosts because I don't see people running to listen to some subpar sports team.

Fair point Mega but two years from now when their rights are up those teams could be on the upswing. I still think the Pistons would be the best bet to be the team that becomes available.
