Lake Superior Bandscan Series

The following maps and scans are from my Lake Superior radio study of this past summer. Instead of posting these many dial scans in separate posts, I will post them as comments below with commentary as necessary. For those who don't often get to this lake, I hope you can enjoy these. :o Equipment is...

Re: Upcoming: 500 TOH IDs from Fremont, Mich.

Thanks! I do photography as well as DX, and started to photograph my radio at each bandscan site starting with my Lake Superior scans in July, all the way around the lake at each site, and then did the same for Lake Erie, Ontario, and the ocean in August. It gives the bandscan a bit extra. As it's j...

Re: Upcoming: 500 TOH IDs from Fremont, Mich.

Except that I don't listen to AM at all, for many years (just once every few years to see what has changed). All the Chicago stations are locals here 24/7 on seek, so I don't feel I'm missing out on anything that is normal here :blink . The thing is, AM radio in North America is a junkyard. I'm sure...

Re: Upcoming: 500 TOH IDs from Fremont, Mich.

Well, I won't speak too much about AM reception as I do not deal with it anymore, though you can see my most recent (Jan. 2015) AM bandscan from my location here on page 19. No special antennas. Just typical car radio reception as the "normal" listener would tune in. As for FM, my entire setup (minu...

Upcoming: 500 TOH IDs from Fremont, Mich.

After many months of work, I'm happy to say that I will soon be releasing my audio compilation of 500 top-of-hour IDs as heard from here in Fremont this summer. The compilation should span a time of just over 5 hours in length and include all 500 commonly heard FM stations as recorded from home on m...

Re: FM Canadian Border Blasters

As others have said, the GTA stations boom into the Buffalo market as they are only 60 miles away and mostly across open water at that. I used to live in Buffalo and all the stations in that area came in on seek or at least close to it and most have a very loyal audience in WNY. Stations like CHUM a...

Re: Style Sheet comment thread

New one is totally better. However, what happened to all the posts between last week and February 2017?? I was looking at the Grand Rapids posts and that entire block of posts is just outright missing. I was thinking someone revived an old thread when I notice one from last year February with no rec...

Re: Why is RDS so inconsistent?

The strangest RDS in my neck of the woods is that of WFBE (Nash FM) in Flint. My old 2008 Dodge Nitro would not decode that station's RDS even in Flint itself - not even the PTY (and despite the fact that my Eton Traveler decoded it just fine). Now I have a 2016 Nissan Rogue that decodes the statio...

Re: Why is RDS so inconsistent?

Your radio has the PS on the top line and the RT on the bottom, but seems to entirely lack the PTY. Mine (a 2004 model) has a single screen where I need to manually switch between them, but I can hold it on the PS or RT by setting it up as such so it stays on there by default and shows whatever info...

Re: Why is RDS so inconsistent?

It depends on the settings of the RDS as far as engineering goes, and how well the signal comes in as to whether or not all the data packets can be decoded on your radio. Engineers can turn up the RDS injection level if they want, where something like 3%+ is a decent signal, meaning that if the stat...
