Re: Treaty for AM protection

The thing in Windsor was the CBEF 540 four towers were badly weathered, considered a safety hazard  , and would have to be taken down anyway for replacement. CBE formerly on 1550 moved to FM and left the freq free for the French CBC programming ! At least, that's one story I heard.. Too bad ...

CKDO 1580 Oshawa, ON is also a 10 kW Class A. It has an Oldies or Classic Hits Format. The channel was formerly used by CBJ in Chicoutimi, QC. It fades a lot but I sometimes listen to it at Night.

Re: ABC12 celebrates 60 years and barely says “boo”

There would be a lot of shadowing from Grand Blanc from the ridge. Not nearly as good as from near Clarkston. Terrain is really important, actually more important than distance within 30 miles or so. There are a couple of peaks above 1000 feet in Genesee County though. But that 8-10 miles South of t...

Re: WLAV's failed tower move to Butterworth dump site, and now - the aftermath!

WGVU has a high NIF contour, from WHBC Canton, WRSW Warsaw, WSDS, WSPY, and other 1480s. That is one reason they had to change to Kentwood, because the NIF didn't cover enough of Grand Rapids. With that, the signal may receive a lot of interference, even with the same FI as WOOD with a low NIF. Duri...

Thanks for posing this, Rich. Is this the geomagnetic skywave model? What is the Real Time model?

Re: Flaming Ember "Westbound # 9"

I thought it was Bowlin' Creek. The rest of the song has very dark lyrics about how and why you might be surprised when you get your DNA results back from Ancestry.com. I think the next line is "I can hear the sound of Albatross the lazy hound, he's howlin' right on time. The song was on the very fi...

Re: Most distant AM/FM/TV signal you ever tuned in?

I saw that WTRX QSL letter report on the internet. One of the other posters here knows him quite well. I think he's still there. Last I remember seeing Dave Gale there, he was with the engineering consultant, it looked like placing new transmission lines in above ground troughs to keep them out of t...

Re: WLAV's failed tower move to Butterworth dump site, and now - the aftermath!

Nope. It is next door to the WFUR site. The site you mentioned belongs to WOOD 1300. WGVU 1480 also has a four tower in line array further North and East. As WMAX(AM) 1480 and WAFT, the nondirectional Daytime facility was also in the Butterworth Dump. Dave Gale, also a WTRX alumnus, advised Grand V...

"Do You Want To Dance" by Bette Midler. I can't stand anything else she sings, especially "The Rose" after having to play it 5 billion times.
"Wind Beneath My Wings" was cowritten by Larry Henley, the falsetto lead singer of The Newbeats (Bread and Butter, Run Baby Run).

KRML "Play Misty for Me" This is a good example because it is also a real radio station. https://fccdata.org/?facid=&call=KRML&ccode=1&city=&state=&country=US&zip=&arn=&party=&party_type=LICEN&latd=&lond= Wasn't Clint Eastwood also once the Mayor of Carmel? http://tenwatts.blogspot.com/2010/10/clin...

Re: Most distant AM/FM/TV signal you ever tuned in?

WTRX was often picked up in Northern Europe/Scandinavia. When I was there as Assistant Chief, I answered probably a dozen reception reports from there. While we didn't have QSL cards, we did have bumper stickers, which I sent with a letter. Car Stars? http://las-solanas.com/surveys/WTRX/WTRX_1976-0...

Here's a good link from 10 years ago. It isn't the one I found before, but it has a lot of similar information.

Some early WJRT people-Bob Scott, Frank Deal, Reed Pasternak/Farrell, Rae Deane Gerkowski. I saw an article recently that had real and stage names for some of the other people. Can't find it though.

Re: Comparing the Signals of WJR and WSB

The way the FCC computes skywave now, the geomagnetic midpoint latitude is used, and skywave from WSB is computed higher because it is further South. I'm not sure how close to real conditions this is, because the sun is not behaving in a normal way with very low sunspot activity during this cycle.

Re: WLAV's failed tower move to Butterworth dump site, and now - the aftermath!

I suggested the WJRW location in previous posts. It is about 656 feet from the WFUR tower. They could replace that tower with a taller one and use a skirting arrangement of the proper electrical height for WJRW, like WRDT has in Royal Oak Township.

Re: Treaty for AM protection

The short answer is yes, unless a suitable substitution is made.

With several of the Canadian Class As, which were almost all CBC at one time, they have mainly been privatized. CBEF 540 became CBEF 1550, a 10 kW former I-B Class A.

Funny thing, the non advanced contours on fccdata.com show it now as nondirectional. The record says nondirectional. The advanced contours are DA. CDBS Application shows the DA.

Sometimes, competitors make it difficult when you try to rent space on their towers. Remember when 101.7 in Lansing was on the same tower with WITL-FM, and got kicked off when they went Country?
